getting ready to make the turbo leap.

well ive had my miata for a little over a month it is a 93. it has been through about 4 bottles of nitrous now and that just isnt enough fun, so its time to boost it. i dyno'd the car and made 97 hp all motor, and 140 on spray. i also did a leak down and compression test and everything is good. these are my plans and what i have tell me what you miata heads think.

i have:

new fuel filter
450 injectors
aem 3.5 bar map sensor
S-AFC
new clutch
slave, and master cluch cylinder

things i am getting:

wideband
boost guage
255 fuel pump

and this kit. MAZDA MIATA 1.6 MOTOR 16G COMPLETE TURBO KIT NEW ITEM:eBay Motors (item 390116174588 end time Dec-08-09 17:34:55 PST)

how does it look? any other suggestions or things i obviously overlooked?

warpigtype-s 12-05-2009 09:53 PM

i forgot to mention i also have all new seals and gaskets except prob the most important one the head gasket.

i also probrobly shoulda stated what my goals were, i just want to make somewhere in the 200hp range

sorry, i dissapoint you :bowrofl: my only points were i was gonna ride out the ebay kit as long as i can and then replace things when they break, i.e. if the turbo starts to go or starts to have a bunch of shaft play, buy a new one. if the manifold cracks, buy a new one. if it lasts then lucky me.

please correct me if im wrong and that my approach is completely aweful but i havent been able to find any turbo kits for under 1k for a 1.6 and i have the money now, so why not?

18psi 12-05-2009 10:07 PM

Well if you know that it will break than I guess you're smarter than the average "ebay kit" question asking noob.

Look at it this way though: you spend the money on that. You have no idea how long it will last. Meaning it could be years (highly doubt it), months (probably), or even a few weeks (also possible).

So if it blows in a week or month you're ok with that?

In that case go ahead and do it. I'd be curious to see what happens myself actually.

And how are you planning to control those "450 injectors" with a shitty apexi safc?

Check the classifieds bro.

That's one that I would jump all over if I was in the market. Ebay is great....but jdm ebay turbo kits for miatas are FTL. Sorry. :hustler:

Jeff_Ciesielski 12-05-2009 10:08 PM

Skip the map sensor 255lph fuel pump and SAFC. Buy a megasquirt. Other than that, I hope you have a friend that can weld that manifold back together :-D.

That right there, is a GREAT setup to start off with.
Add on MS and a few other things and you have yourself a good setup.

why skip the map and 255, my fuel pump sucks so i need a new one no matter what. and are you telling me the safc and map sensor is worthless?

Map sensor is not worthless.
Safc is a HEAPING PIECE OF DIARHEAL SHIT
the wally 255 is overkill for your car. most you really need is a 190

Proper engine management like megasquirt and some of the others is 1000000000000000000000000 times better than that shitty safc signal modifier

warpigtype-s 12-05-2009 10:19 PM

appreciate the help, and the afc was just to hold me over until i get a megasquirt. i already had the safc, so i didnt have to spend anything on it.

warpigtype-s 12-05-2009 10:22 PM

so do you guys think i shouldnt even waste my time with the setup im currently trying for. like i said i know that ebay kit isnt gonna last forever. i was hoping to get a few months out of it and then save and replace shit as they break

18psi 12-05-2009 10:23 PM

Why not spend just a tiny bit more and get the good stuff from classifieds?
Why intentionally aim for failure when you can get it right the first time?

warpigtype-s 12-05-2009 10:31 PM

because im anxious lol and can't stand driving a n/a miata so i want it done quick, on second thought i think i am just gonna fight my urge to buy this right now and try to piece together my own kit, ill have to make a new thread i gues on DIY turbo section.

this is why i asked questions, here. the reason i was trying to go the route i was is i was talking to a guy that has a turbo nb miata and he was telling me this would be a good way to go. so i just figured as long as i had decent fuel and supporting mods i would be ok.

things to get... manifold, turbo, fpr, oil lines and intercooler pieces.

any advice on brands other than gready or begi? i konw those two are solid but incase i find a good deal on another brand ill have an idea if im waisting my time or not

like i said all advice and input is appreciated

I'd trust everything in that ebay kit except the manifold, assuming you're using MS, 450's, and a wide band. It used to be standard that we'd say china turbochargers suck, but a number of people are running them, and although I'm pretty sure everyone's reported less performance than from a comparable Garrett or Mitsubishi unit, I don't think we've seen any failures.

That being said, like 18psi said buy the walbro 190. Do you know your stock pump is bad or do you think it's bad just cause it's the stock one. If it hasn't failed yet, keep it, you should be fine for the low boost tune you should be running while you get everything sorted. Sell the map sensor and S-AFC. Contact the guy in my sig about making a MS for you. they're cheaper than you think.

curly 12-05-2009 10:38 PM

That friend of yours is an idiot. Being a complete newb and saying you're thinking about buying an eBay kit isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if you listen to us when we say they're shit, which is sounds like you are. But being experienced with turbo'd Miata's and suggested eBay kits is idiotic, don't trust him or his advice.

Don't get a fpr, get a megasquirt.

capitalize your I's.

warpigtype-s 12-05-2009 11:03 PM

lol my computer usually capitalizes them for me. Another thing, why would i not need a fpr with megasquirt? the reason i say my fuel pump is bad is because it was lean as hell and then richened up a little on the dyno on spray, also when i would spray only fuel through my nitrous set up (wet obviously) it wouldn't really break up or bog down. so i unhooked the fuel side to my nitrous setup and just sprayed it into some dirt patch and it would delay before it sprayed anything and the stream was really weak. this is after a new fuel filter too.

18psi 12-05-2009 11:05 PM

Because megasquirt controls fuel injection the proper way, with fuel injectors instead of raising fuel pressure.

curly 12-05-2009 11:17 PM

Nitrous? Oh boy. Yes, MS uses your injectors to control your fueling. You know, like a regular car. I have no idea what you just said, something about NOS. your fuel pump is probably fine.

You can't go wrong with my kit, ETD/Garrett/Tial...everything fitting correctly the right time; the cost to fit that Egay kit will cost you just as much if not more than my simple bolt on kit. And it's proven...I made 280 whp at 15 psi...381 whp at 25 psi
