greddy timing recommendations ?

hi again, i just finished my greddy kit install a couple days ago and began driving the car around. i retarded the timing to 4* btdc just to play it safe for awhile, i think 4*'s defines low end for sure, but anyways my setup is basically a stock greddy @5psi with intercooler and bov.

i have no experiance with detonation, like i don't know what it sounds like or what kind of things i should be listening for when it occurs so thats why im coming to you guys for advice on timing.

I live in reno, nv right now. 4,500 feet above sea level and highs of 50* during the day and its going to be snowing soon, will those kinds of temperatures and elevation affect how much advance timing i can run ?

so i guess my main question would be, how much more timing can i run with my current set-up and be safe ?

I don't have a GReddy, but it seems like most GReddy owners here set base timing at 6* without intercooler, or near 8* with an intercooler. Better still is to snag up a Bipes when one comes up for sale.

shinobix 11-19-2006 07:10 PM

yea, i've been itching for a bipes. just don't have the 200 bucks laying around quite yet.

LunaticDriver 11-19-2006 08:30 PM

change it to 6* i would think 4* would make your EGT really high

Braineack 11-19-2006 08:33 PM

bring it back up to wherever it starts to ping and then drop it back a point or two.

shinobix 11-19-2006 09:02 PM

when u say bring it up to where it starts to ping and back it down. what do you mean ? do i turn up timing drive around while boosting and listen for pinging ? then turn it down more until it won't ping while under boost ? thanks again guys i really appreciate everyones help.

Just take the timing adjustments really easy and take it 1 degree at a time. One thing that you need to remember is that during the heat of the day, there is more chance of detenation, so if you are doing this at night, then you are going to have to go down a few extra degrees. With an intercooler you sould definately be safe with some additional degrees.

gotcha, thanks steve

I ran at 6* BTDC and I hated it, I sucked up the expenditure and went with a Bipes and reset the timing to 10* BTDC, much mo' bettah!

kotomile 11-22-2006 06:19 AM

I ran 6* at first too, sucked..

Got a bipes, now I run 14* base and 6* only in boost, much more responsive.

Planning to go to 8* when saab IC comes and even higher once my lazy ass installs my WI kit.

Braineack 11-22-2006 08:35 AM

I was running at 6° for a few days before I went to the dyno for a tune. I had a brain fart so I thought I advanced it to 16° so my Bipes was pulling me -2°. I couldn't figure out why it bogged so much in lowband. Only made 135hp on the dyno, bumped it back up to 16° and I was making closer to 150 IIRC.

Mimime 11-22-2006 11:26 AM

Would you guys think getting an EGT to fine tune the timming is esential? I am hearing ppl running from 4-16 BTDC. For myself, running 8 and hating it. Can't install the EMB until I could get my hand on the WB02 installed.

magnamx-5 11-22-2006 12:01 PM

no just go by ping egts dont tell you knock and unless you go 300+ whp i dont matter, just stick with af and audiable or knock sensor.

jayc72 11-22-2006 12:11 PM

Why the magical 300+hp number? I would think EGT is as important at 150whp as it is at 300whp. Can blow things up real good at either level if the tune is fubar.

Mimime 11-22-2006 12:14 PM

I didn't even check my timming after Greddy was installed ( guessing it was 10 BTDC), but after days got my hand on a timming gun it was more like 14 BTDC. They car didn't knock even while I was running at 14. On the safe side, I retarded back to 8 BTDC an hour ago, and been hating it!!!! I will take it back up to 10 BTDC tomorrow, its winter time about 22 degrees, and we have 98 Octane fuel.

the likely hood of the motor still running at less than 300 hp and makeing those outrageus egts is very low the momentum and sheer amount of air and fuel moved at the 300 or so hp mark outpaces anything stock for a miata hence i set it as a bench mark. it isnt a hard number more of a gues think about it if you are throwing enough fuel to get 1600+ degrees egt's then you wil be flooding out the stock motor 4 sure. Know what i mean man

If you get gauges, I would suggest getting some decent gauges. I made the mistake of wasting money on Megan Racing gauges. The voltmeter and boost gauge work well enough, but the EGT gauge I got is pure crap. It sticks at 950, which wouldn't be an unreasonable number... at idle. I flick it every once in a while to make sure the needle moved.

I'm not sure I follow you.

Wouldn't higher EGT be caused by a lean mixture, or running excessively retarded timing? Which could easily happen on the out of the box greddy setup up right? So really throwing additional fuel should bring down the EGT I'd think.

Anyway, what the hell were we talking about? :)

FWIW, I got some detonation today. 13° pulling 6° with an MSD Sebring Controller. Detonation occured at the top of third after winding out 1-2-3. I'd estimate ambient around 50° F. I'm throwing a ton of fuel into the motor.

I don't get any detonation with a WOT run from a roll through 3rd.

I just did a run this past weekend. Like I said earlier, I have a Bipes set up for 12* BTDC (as per instructions on Greddy Turbo FAQS) but I have my timing set at 10* BTDC. I had no detonation, but then again I have a smoked clutch. Appearantly a Value Line 1.6 liter clutch isn't designed to hold up under stress.
