Greddy vs BEGi for my 1.6
so i'm new to miatas, new to turbos... actually... i never sped up a car before but a few buddies and i all bout miatas. one guy is doing the monster swap and the another guy and myself are looking to do a turbo for ours. the guy doing the swap is a mechanic and owned a miata before, buyt never got around doing a turbo. he told me about the greddy and i was set... 1300 for a turbo kit seems like a nice price... but recently he told me that a company called BG came out with a turbo kit for 1600 and i believe he sed its a little bigger. now, i'm looking for a daily driver, but maybe something else down the road. my buddy sed greddy has a turbo the i can upgrade to wen i'm ready. we know nothing about the bg kit accept that it exists... can anybody out there help us out? i don't mind paying 300 more for a better kit or even a kit that'll do the exact same... i'm just afraid of paying more and regreting it or buying the greddy and finding out that an extra 300 and i woulda been a lot happier. as i sed... i'm not a car guy, but i've heard the name greddy... never heard of bg... so i assume greddy is a better company. anything helps

Get the Begi (not BG) kit, it is well worth the extra 300 bucks.

Get the BEGi.
Just do it and don't look back. In the end, you'll end up upgrading either kit anyway. With the BEGi, you'll get dependable parts that you can use for any upgrade path. With the GReddy, you're going to have to replace just about everything until the only original parts you'll have are the Turbo, manifold, and oil feed line. Those costs will easily eat up any difference in price between the two base kits down the road. |
BEGi, or BELL ENGINEERING, is owned by Corky Bell. He's kinda the Einstein of turbo's. He's got a soft spot for Miatas and has been making turbo kits for them since the Miata came out. His kits are awesome and worth every penny.
The kit you're referring to is the BEGi "S" kit. http://www.bellengineering.net/ It will put you at a comfortable and reliable +/-150whp, and is about 10,000,000% better than the Greddy kit. There are only two hard parts about installing one. The first is getting the stock exhaust system out as the bolts/nuts are going to be an absolute bitch to get off. Liquid Wrench and GOOD tools are your friend. The second is tapping the oilpan for the oil drain line. It's actually fairly easy to do once you overcome your fear that somebody telling you to drill a hole in the side of your engine knows what they're talking about. Other than that, it's easier than Ikea furniture to put together. |

If you buy the S kit, I'd spend a couple of extra $$$ and upgrade the DP. The one that the kit comes with looks a little less than ideal.

Good choice. The only reason so many of us even have the Greddy is because the Begi-S wasn't out at the time.

Each kit is pretty much made to order. Expect some downtime as they put together your kit, built just for you, to your specifications.
I'm waiting for SS feed and drain lines. Yes, apparently those are built to order too. :eek5: |
i would go with BEGI-S. I am looking into getting one soon. I have heard about to many issues with the Greddy Manifold

I have a greddy kit and 3 of my friends went with the begi-s kits(two 1.6 kits and 1 1.8 kit). I was driving my car around about 3 hours after i started the install. It is super easy on a 1.6. The begi-s kits come with quality products but be prepared to have more than 3 hours downtime. The kit is a little more involved seeing as you get a water cooled turbo and the 3 installs i have witnessed needed a trip or two to the hardware store for nuts and bolts. One kit also took nearly two weeks to be completed because we where waiting on a few parts that didn't come with the kit initially. One being a wastegate. Also if you plan to keep the maf hopefully they improved the 1.6l mount a little because the two 1.6L kits i have witnessed had the 1.6l maf to airfilter adapter not seem to actually bolt anywhere. Many people with the proper relief cuts in the manifold have been running their greddy kits for 10k miles plus. Just something to think about. Begi does sell great product and their support staff is very helpfull.

Well I'm the new guy and bought a Greddy kit (cheep)and the car has not even started yet and the only part I have not up graded is the turbo.

I might have considered the BEGI S kit if it had been out last year, but then again I got my Greddy kit used for $600 and the money I saved went into an intercooler.
I'd wait around and see if you can find a Greddy kit used as they pop up a lot. |
