heat blanket questions
 

Hey guys,

Just wondering, about the heat issues with the Greddy.

I would like to buy some of that heat blanket type of stuff.
What type do you guys suggest?

I am thinking of covering everything in that area. Will the hood underside be ok?

the easiest & cheapest thing is the GReddy heat shield made by FM.

Keinayo and i believe one other are selling one in the for sale section.

Other than that, insulate what you don't want to get hot, so wrap the heater lines, brake lines, etc. in heat tape.

I agree, no need to get a blanket.
All I have is the heat shield and some reflector tape covering the water bottle for the windscreen (my steering wheel is on the other side BTW).

If your upgrading to the TurboTony downpipe, wrap the coolant line in the back (maybe its heater). When I pulled my greddy setup I saw that the extreme heat was kind of wearing away at it. There's a post of all the crap you should be wrapping up somewhere. I think I got my wrap at AutoBarn online and it was actually fairly cheap.

Note: Use zipties... do NOT rely on the adhesive crap. What you'll find is that the material is rated to like 3k degrees or something absurd, but the adhesive is rated to like 500 degrees..so it just melts.

the only zip tie ive ever melted was because i sat it on the manifold for a minute after driving.

you could always use a few worm clamps if you're concerned about the zips.

the one place where I see people use zip ties that drives me nuts is holding an aftermarket fuel pump onto the pump/float assembly.

Marine Turbo blankets.

I did some tuning about 6 years ago on a T66 Supra with one of these things, you could rest your hand on the blanket during a pass on the dyno. Freaking awesome.

I think if you canget any premade heatshield that fits its worth it...

if you want to see what amature hands with tinsnips/rivits/alloy sheet/heat shield can do for about 30$.

it works well enough for me to put my hand on (and only feel heat on the rivits) on 0 boost runs... Im sure it will work 80% so I shielded everything I was worried about as well.

Anyway, it looks good. I've got to try to build one sometime. How many places did you attach it? Where did you get the metal (not sure where to source stuff like that) and how thick is it?

I run a combo of stainless zipties from Thermotec and little worm drive clamps. I bought a box of those zipties for a pretty low price from Autobarn.

Interesting, so what is Corky's reasoning for such strong statements? I worked on F-14s in the NAVY and I'll tell you what, it's seems more efficient to wrap hot ducts then to shield sensitive electronics. Assuming his reasoning is that the heat will break down the metals faster, I still think it's better then a potential engine fire hazard. Correct me if I don't see the light.

since it's very effective to just wrap a few lines and the master, it's all good.

corky has seen DPs and such literally fall apart in his hands with use. others have not, but i tend to give him the benefit of the doubt.

FWIW, i made a cheap and easy shield with 16g SS for about $20. protects my master and intake and works fine.

I like the heat shield that you have, I actually did basically the exact same thing on my turbo supra that i used to own. Is the heat an issue at all on the hood (paint) at all?

I may do that same thing as you (again) You say that you did wrap some pipes and hoses etc?

Your best bet is to just get the Greddy heatshield from FM.It's a really well made piece that fits nice and you want have to monkey around in making one yourself.
