Help needed identifying turbo kit
 

Hi all,

Just a bit of background, about 5 years ago I put 20k miles on a 1.6NA with a full Flyin Miata turbo kit with the G2554 turbo. Was a great car but ended up selling it to get into C5 corvettes. I've now come full circle back to a stock NA miata. A really good deal came up on parts from a crashed car that basically had everything from Flyin Miata. I can get the turbo kit cheap, along with clutch, Torsen LSD, driveshafts, Link ecu etc..

I went to check it out and the kit is certainly quite old, older than my last kit. The manifold is a cast, log style with 1.6 stamped on the bottom. The downpipe is unusual and has a large flange with captive nuts welded onto it. Given that everything else on the car is FM, I'm inclined to think this may be one of their early kits but was hoping someone could offer some insight on it.

I'll probably get the kit regardless as the pricing is great, but wanted feedback on what I may have.

The intercooler tubing looks quite outdated to me, I think my kit had formed silicone hoses but I can't remember exactly.

Looks like an old Begi/FM setup.

Thanks, talked to FM and they confirmed that's the case.

Unfortunately the seller lost the air temp sensory, and I didn't know to check for one until I had done further research on the kit.

Reached out to the manufacturer that FM used for the sensors and they have been out of production since 2010, and out of stock since 2015.

Hoping someone has one on a shelf somewhere to save my ass, as otherwise it looks like this entire ECU setup is useless. Anyone sort out an alternative to the FM air temp sensor?

Is it the old link ecu setup? That uses a PWM based temp sensor. Could probably be spoofed with a timer chip and a regular resistive temp sensor. Just check it for some known temperatures and calibrate it.

That said, my friend just replaced his 1.6 Link setup with a speeduino, I could ask if he would be willing to part with the whole thing. The ECU is a tad flakey cause the processor socket is loose, but otherwise worked fine if you resest the chip occationally.

I would reccomend going with a newer ECU though. PNP speeduinos for 1.6s are a whole $260.

Thanks for the reply, the electrical design side of things is out of my wheelhouse unfortunately. I got all of the specs from the manufacturer and sent them to a friend who is an electrical engineer who seemed to think it would be quite complicated to replicate.

I'll look into the PNP speeduino, hadn't heard of that. If you don't mind inquiring about your friends old Link, that might be the easiest option for me.

I am assuming you checked the intake elbow for the sensor? They had a spot for it there in the old kits.

Yeah, Speediefi has the PNP speeduinos. At minimum you need the GM IAT sensor, the TPS isn't strictly nessisary since they added support for map based accelerstion enrichment.

I did check, it wasn't in the elbow and the previous owner specifically recalled seeing it but ended up scraping the shell with the harness and the sensor in it. The sensor was hard wired into the harness so he didn't think it would be associated with the turbo kit.

The full PNP is still good value relative to a MS3, my last turbo miata had the GM IAT so it would be more familiar to me than the link. Thanks for the heads up about the TPS, seems like that might be a bit easier for me.
