HKS bolt on kit... on a 2004 1.8 VVT?
 
Hello everybody,

I'm new here but if things go as I hope here will be a new Home for me...

I own a 1991 NA that 3 years ago I upgraded with a full engine-gearbox-transmission of a 2004 1.8 variable timing engine and 6 gears gearbox.

Everything goes fine but today I read on the italian forum of a guy selling an NB HKS kit at the price of 1100 € ($ 1500)... I WANNA HAVE IT!!!!

It is all new and never used, he decided of building up a DIY kit.

It has japanese fitting instructions and tonight he will see on the handbook if there is any image of my engine head, that is the only difference between the normal and the VVT.

DO ANYBODY KNOWS IF EXIST AN HKS KIT FOR MY ENGINE 2004 1.8 VVT?

COULD THIS ONE BE IT?

will it work fine with my BP7N oem ECU?

The kit comes without intercooler, is it abslutely necessary for a safe use?

He can sell me this intercooler (precision turbo), without the pipings for 200 € ($ 280)

I don't know of anyone who has ever used that kit, but for that amount of money why don't you look at a Begi kit or FM kit and know for sure that the parts fit and work for your car.

No you don't have to use an intercooler it is strongly recommended though. If you don't intercool make sure you have a way to monitor for detonation and keep track of your A/Frs. I would recommend a wideband and maybe EGT gauges along with a boost gauge just for starters.

I read here about low priced kits, but for shipping and customs to Italy you have to add at minimum 500$ shipping and +20% (price+shipping) customs...

I like HKS, I think they make good kits, isn't it?

I know tat intercooler is very useful, if i take this kit I will buy it too, I only have to do some DIY pipings...

The Kit should work fine, (Had that manifold on my car for a year, before i made my own manifold) unless the 04 head is different then a 97 as far as exhaust manifold bolt pattern? you will also have to find someone there to set-up the F-CON (The instructions are in Japanese) it will piggyback any ECU. The manifold places the turbo high in the engine bay so you may want to protect the underside of the hood from heat some how (I didnt and the hood is much darker where the turbo was under) . I would recommend getting the intercooler also as that can = more power (depending on the amount of boost). if you get it? Looks like there will stil be some fab work that needs to be done, but the rewards will be well worth it.:bigtu:

The 1.8's all have the same exhaust flange, which is why you can run the same manifolds on the 1.8s. However, the downpipes are different... since the mid-pipe vs exhaust config on the M1 1.8s....

Also I'm not sure about the piggy-back.... might be better to go with something like an MS.....

Why did you change the manifold? I'm pretty sure it fits on my block, my worry is about the fact mine head has the VVT on aspiration side and Flyin Miata kits give you the pulley to remove it, because it is unnecessary,
BUT LEAVING VVT would be a problem??
I suppose I could leave it in one position (open or closed) Sould I leave it as in the low rev condition or in the high one?

About the F-Con Config (isn't it pre-mapped?)... is it difficult? DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE ENGLISH VERSION OR A PROCEDURE??
I suppose it should be done with an A/F monitor to to regulate its values..

THANK YOU FOR THE SUGGESTION ABOUT THE HOOD, I think I will "close the turbo in a "box" for daily use (also to hide it in case of cops inspection...in Italy is really OUTLAW but I already hava a 1.8 instead of a 1.6 so...)

I think in the beginning to try it without intercooler to make it simple, at stock pressure 0,3-0,4 bar could it give me problems? Shoul I use colder spark plugs? Which grade?

Mazda suggests for the stock N/A ngk grade 5 or 6, I use BKR6EIX (iridium) now should I go for the 7 grade?

Ok for the headers flange, but the kit is intended for NB use so the pipes should be good for that...

Otherwise I can always cut the old one to fit the new one...

why not the piggy back? What is the MS??

consider that the 3k $ voodoo kit will cost me 4320 $ (incl shipping)......

I changed the manifold because the T25 i was using was to small. at 1.1 bar @ 4900RPM then .8 bar @ 6500RPM. This means it was way past its efficientcy. So i went with a bigger turbo Plus an MS1 ECU (Megasquirt) and bigger injectors and all that good stuff.
anyways I don't think there would be any issue with leaving the VVT alone. And if the piggy back is pre-programed then your good to go, but check the AF while boosting to be sure. may still need some adjustments to get the max potential. I never found an english version, but i asked a girlfriend that could speak japanese to help me translate the instructions and we sat down and translated most of it over a few beers, long story short it took 2 weeks and i still don't have a clear understanding of the instruction.
I am not sure if there is enough room for building a box around the turbo as i only had 1 to 1 1/2 inches of hood clearance.
No intercooler is fine but sound like a good deal, and not having to redo the intake/intercooler piping when you want more boost. plan for the future so you dont redo a bunck of things which = more money out of your pocket. "pay now or pay more later"
The stock plugs are fine at your desired boost level, but 1 step cloder wont hurt either. I use NGK's BKR7ES-11.
GL, and hopefully you will be boosting soon.

I understand that the T25 is not intended for high boosts... i read somewhere it shoud go around 0.3 - 0.4 bar, what power could I achieve without intercooler?

My engine has a declared power of 146 but I suppose is less about 140...

About the F-con so you have it too? Am I optimistic in sayn it is pre programmed? The kit is specific for 1.8 mx5...

The manual translation, also if not complete, can be shared??

I suppose the setup is mad turning the screws on it?

I've had very good success with their products. Wastegates are top notch, exhausts are well built, and I have nothing bad to say about their turbo manifold for my 97 1.8 motor. I would think this kit would be worthwhile if it was under $1000 though.

did it look exactly the same? do you remember its shape, or have any pictures?

I'm wondering why the turbocharger in the pics has no brand written on the compressor side so my thoughtds are that it could be a fake kit... what do you think about??

The manifold is the same as the one that I am using, and yes the turbo needs to be shielded from the hood. Also the manifold has no provisions for EGR, so you will probably throw a CEL.

But your turbo is from an HKS kit?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY IN THE PICS THE GUY GAVE ME THERE IS NO BRAND ON THE COMPRESSOR SIDE... IT SHOULD BE A GARRETT T25G 60T A/R0.64 BUT I'VE NOTHING TO PROVE IT... I TOLD HIM TO READ THE CODES OR SEND ME OTHER PICTURES...

As somebody said the downpipe (the 2nd piece) should be cut and welded to the OEM cat, but i don't think that's a problem!

No problem with the EGR...already removed because the 2004 engine is on an 1991 car so... the "CARB" is different.

what do you mean with :
