no you open up the top of the afm and that wheel in the inside you turn clockwise and thats the way you wtune it

do you have a wideband? that's really the best way to tune the idle.

the screw is simply the idle air mixture screw, so it will allow you to trim back the fuel if running larger injectors.

to adjust it for driving condition, you must open up the top black plastic cover and change the tension on the flapper. Typically a non-turbo miata sees about 6-8 click looser.

I know I should search for this, (call me lazy) but what are the advantages of the RX7 AFM?

The orifice through which the air passes is larger. Thus, it will be slightly less restrictive in very high load conditions.

This is also why it needs to be re-calibrated for the Miata. The range of the potentiometer inside is the same as the stock MX5 part, however since the air passage is larger, a given volume of air will cause a smaller deflection of the flapper valve.

how do i open the black piece on the top of the afm?

you use an exacto knife and cut around the edge up it then pry it open. then once your done use some rtv or hot glue to glue it closed.
