Installing an extra water temp and oil pressure gauge
 

Any recomendations on location on the engine the sensors should go???

Water temp... They make adaptors that you can put inline with the heater hose (basically a pipe section with a 1/8" NPT thread on the side) however they scare me. I bought one and noted that after installing the sender into it, the sender itself blocked probably 50% of the area of the pipe. You can also install such an adaptor in the upper radiator hose without this flow problem, but you'll get a somewhat less accurate reading here.

Oil pressure... You can tee into the 1/8" BSP thread in the block (FM has an adaptor for this) or if you have an external oil cooler or oil filter mount you can put a tee in one of those lines.

1.6 and early 1.8 engines could in theory use the M10x1.5 thread on the hot side of the block, where we normally take the feed to the turbo. Probably get a slightly lower reading here than in the usual position. If you've already upgraded to -AN hoses for this feed it should be a simple plumbing job. Otherwise forget it.

For the water temp. I was thinking of taping into the water housing on the rear of the motor or maybe of the exit of the water pump on the exhaust side of the motor....I figured that it would be a bad idea to tap into the thermostat housing (possibly interfer with flow and operation of thermostat and waterpump....

Heck, if you have access to the rear water outlet that's probably the best place for it. The thermostat housing would have the same problem as the upper radiator hose- almost no flow when the thermostat is closed, and at that point you also have a mixture of hot water coming off the head and cooled water that's just been returned from the radiator. (assuming stock flow path.)

I agree- the rear coolant cap is the best spot, especially with the OE path. There's plenty of room to get it in there- I ran a mechanical sender on my 99 back there.

There's also sandwich plate adapters available for adding sensor ports- goes between the filter and the block (or OE cooler).

I have the motor out, so getting to the back is no problem

By rear coolant cap, you mean the one directly under the crank angle sensor?

I think he means the outlet that feeds the heater core and contains the factory sensor. Same one you're talking about.
