Intake location and its affect on AIT
Interesting observation from today.
With the intake U tube and the airfilter in the standard greddy position, today and yesterday, I was seeing intake temps of 140 deg f at hot idle. With the airfilter 4" forward of the turbo, sticking straight forward (like olderguy's but without the afm) intake temps were 110 deg f at hot idle. |
wow...but how do you run that without the intake flapper thing? haha

i'm curious how this translates to intake temps under boost, many people will argue air filter locations are meaningless since the air still has to travel through the intercooler. I'm wondering if the 30 degree delta will still exist under boost

90° to behind headlight w/ NACA duct; heat sheild blocking the turbo = slightly higher than ambient idle & cruise

Ok, here are some datalog captures. The first is with the greddy air intake position:
MAP 136 kpa Mani Temp 122F CLT 211F AFR 10:1 The second is with the airfilter straight off the turbo, pointing towards the front of the car MAP 160 kpa Mani Temp 108F CLT 207 AFR 12.7:1 So, with the intake towards the front, this shows more boost, with a leaner mix, at lower temps. |
Ben ,could translate what "kpa" and "clt" means for the un-iniated? Thanks.

anything over ~100 kpa means under boost. 7kpa=1psi

I took some datalogs (20 minutes worth) after getting my car on the road today with no hood installed and intake placed just behind the headlight. I have a gt2554, 16x10x2" intercooler, megasquirt, 150kpa (about 8psi). According to Megatune and a GM AIT tapped into the manifold, my highest temperatures were 114 and lowest 94. What was even more surpisising was that the highest temps were at idle/cruise, and the lowest were under boost.

I know there will be a difference in normal running putting the air filter out of the way of the turbo heat, but it does make less difference than you'd think. Idle is really the only place you'd notice it at all as you start to get heat soak through the filter and the intercooler is only running on the air the cooling fans are drawing through. |

CLT = coolant temp, ie engine temp Brainy I can later, but it's not going to be apples-apples because I expect significant changes to my tune. |
brainy- did you ever do air temp test with the naca headlight duct? I'd be curious to see what ms shows the intake temp at with the naca covered and uncovered. :dunno:

Surface temps only....with the NACA duct the filter directly behind it was 85° on a 80° day (GReddy location w/ heatsheild). Without the duct is was closer to 160°. I wrote it all down then forgot to take it home with me....

I wonder how a yellow kevlar naca duct would look on a black NB... I think a cold air intake like that is in my near future.
