Lifter noise
 

OK, I finished the water pump and timing belt install yesterday, and went to start it up, and there was quite a bit of lifter noise. The noise is coming from about #2or3 cylinder on the intake side. Do you guys think that the lifters just need to have some oil ran through them. I was also going to switch to a 20w-50 oil when I get ready to put the greddy in. If this has happened to you please just let me know so that I can track the culprit. I am still learning about these dohc motors, and must feed brain with info.:crx:

After my TB/WP job, I got about 10-15 minutes of lifter tick that went away after the car ran for a bit.

Cold start on fresh oil change, they have a habit of ticking more -- until the pressure kicks up. But I've been finding with the colder weather they tick a little long (30secs) on cold start....

But at least the cold air is good for boost. <G>

What oil are you running now? What filter? Those can make a difference....

Yeah, this is exactly what I am getting, brgracer, it took about 15 minutes for yours to go away, cool, the sealant that I used for the water pump takes 24 hrs to set up, so after that I will take it for a ride and see if it goes away. Thanks for the quick response guys, this site rules for actually getting the information out instead of just bs'ing the situation. Lots of experience on this board.

I have been having some nasty lifter tick lately. Was running Amsoil 5w30 and it would be good for 2800k miles and it would gradually come back. Just moved to Tennessee and its been pretty cool out lately and no one around here carries amsoil so I changed it out awhile back with Mobile 1 5w30. About to do another oil change here soon and was going to try and thicker weight see if that would take car of it. Any suggestions?

Mine went away after about 5 mins of running. In your situation, from my experience with pushrod motors, step up to a thicker oil. You need to get some cushion in there and also depending on how many miles there are on there, a good valve adjustment mey also cure it. But sometimes if they haven't been adjusted for a while, things just break when you go to do it. But also, I do not know because these looked like flat type lifters and not roller, but they are hydraulic I do believe. Also, it may be a bad lifter and just keeps bleeding down. But like I said, this is my past experience with pushrod motors, I am venturing into new territory with dohc.

Also, first gear pulls pretty damn hard but when I shift, it seems to take it a second to getty-up and go. Also, mind you I have not been able to check the timing yet, do you think that could be the problem. It also happens when I go wot in any gear but first. Is this just I am use to more power and need the greddy more and more each day. I am going to shit my pants when I see the timing because I found the intake cam retarded by one degree when I did my timing belt change.:eek5:

I run 5W50 and rarely ever have trouble with the lifters. Much better than the 15W50 I used to run. Good on cold starts and good when running the car hard and hot.

If you don't have a bov then it could be your compressor stalling from the back pressure. Do you hear a turkey gobble between shifts?

The turbo is not installed yet, so this will not be a problem. The turbo should get here tonight so that I can start the install and hopefully finish up tommorrow and start tuning the emanage. But, before you got the turbo on your car, did your car do this. Also, I am running seafoam through the fuel system right now to help decarbon the motor. I am trying to get the car in the best running condition prior to the turbo, so just wanted to know what it sounds like to you. I know that sometimes when the afm gets dirty, it can cause a situation like this because it also smells like it is running rich. I am holding off to change out the o2 sensor until I am getting the greddy in, even though I know that this could be part of the problem.
