looking into a miata with GT2560R Turbo, Potential problem?

Hello, I've been looking for a NB miata with supercharger or turbo already installed (not mazdaspeed). I found a 1999. What kind of potential problem should I look out for?

Seller says

"GT2560R Garrett Turbocharger set at 8psi, 200whp
Custom tubular exhaust manifold
BEGI downpipe(upper)
Treadstone performance intercooler
Apexi Titanium Exhaust
Voodoo Fuel management box/ignition retard wheel
Apexi Boost Gauge
Apexi EGT Gauge(not functioning, sensor needs to be replaced, which I will throw in the deal)
Apexi AVC-R Electronic boost controller
Apexi Pen Turbo timer
(The A/F ratio at 8psi/7,000rpm is set to 12.1:1 according to wideband so its running a very rich/safe setup to protect the engine.)
6-Speed manual transmission
Exedy Stage II clutch disc/pressure plate"

I'm fairly sure I want higher power than stock but would like to come ahead in cost compared to buying a stock and installing a turbo or supercharger. So I'm looking for one that installed. But is it generally a good idea? I wonder whether turbo on miata could be pretty picky and whether seller generally sells because they have problem with tuning?

Also if all is good, what kind of extra would be fair market value for turboed miata over stock one with same mileage condition?

Very new to Miata turbo. Appreciate any help!

You should almost always come out ahead financially when you buy someone else's project, unless there is something significantly wrong with that project.

....assuming your time is worth $0.00/hr. Buying someone else's completed shop-built project is a great way to save money - buying someone else's aborted half-assed project is a great way to end up with a huge headache as you fix all their mistakes.

Heuuum... That's interesting. If I buy turboed Miata and drove home gingerly, what are general way to make sure they are working fine? Is there any comprehensive post about that, or should I research for each pre-fab manufacturer?

Got a picture of engine bay. The seller says 23K on turbo (88K on the car). Would this be too many miles?

Price of car?

Clos561 05-08-2012 04:29 PM

thats not alot of miles, but it also depends on how harsh it was driven i think. My car is approaching 200k and has been turbo for almost 25k 10psi. what is the price? pics of entire car?

Seller is asking 8300$. Its an 99 AE. It appears that there are a bunch of other small issue with the car, like tear in top, hole in the driver's seat. But those I can deal with or have ideas about how much it's going to be to fix.

you should ask him what he did with the ae rims. those are base nb rims.

I wouldn't buy it. It's a lot of money and in my opinion you would need to pour more money into it (ECU, wheels, tires, suspension).

You can get a better deal for same price.

I would definitely deal to get price lower if I buy due to other issues I listed. Stock rim supposed come with the car with different tires. Seller says suspension is replaced with Tien. I need to know what I should look out paticularly in terms of turbo, what price is good to offer, if it runs well when I test drive. I generally am good with detect odd sound with engine etc, but very little experience with turbo. Did test drive a 2004 mazdaspeed stock previously, but unimpressed...

Your location is missing in your profile - fix that.

You're still thinking that you're buying a car. No, you're buying someone's project that's just shaped like a car. Before it actually becomes a car, there's a bunch of ---- you have to do.

Like that voodoo box. I can only imagine it's wired in using wire nuts (protip: wire nuts don't belong on a car)
