Max whp with the Begi S1 turbo system

Hi,

What hp numbers have you gained with this kit? My car is 1994 Miata and my goal is 250 whp with the following modifications:

Intercooler #3 (the largest one Begi sells)
Walbro 255 lph gas pump
500 cc injectors
Full programmable Hestec ecu (sold only in Northern Europe)
ACT Extreme clutch

So far the car has 2.25 exhaust and the stock cat but I have received the 3” exhaust and the mid pipe from Begi.

According to the dynotest on last month the max boost is 10.5 psi and the power is 196 whp. The boost will be tuned up at the same time with the new exhaust and the mid pipe. I don’t know what boost numbers will be used but probably 15 psi or more.

I’m planning also on the following upgrades before adding boost:
dump valve
cooler thermostat
extra fan
I’m not going to rebuild the engine or change the 5 speed transmission yet

I hope my goal is possible but has anyone gained more horsepowers with this turbo kit and the GT2554R turbo?

Marko

Oh shit, another mark....they're getting to be too many of them...

Nice first post I guess see you've been hanging around for a few months, add your location to your profile, specs to your signature, and post up some pics. Search a lot, read a lot, learn a lot, then post a little.

Braineack 09-12-2008 03:27 PM

you'll struggle to make that goal with that turbo, it's not the rest of the components that will hold you back

Thucydides 09-12-2008 08:41 PM

To make 250 H.P. you'll need about 15 psi boost and a pressure ratio of just over 2.4. If you go to the Garrett website and look up the compressor curve for the GT2554R you'll see the turbo will be on the edge of it's efficiency curves at around 60%. So you might get there, especially since you seem to be doing the rest correctly, but you'll need that large intercooler you so wisely chose because the little GT2554R will be making some heat. Perhaps you planned it this way all along.

What you might consider, especially if you plan on being up in the 250 H.P. range for any significantly duration - say on a race track, is the GT2560 turbo. At the same 15 psi and 2.4 pressure ratio efficiency is between 72% and 73%, and that means much less heat.

You can upgrade the turbo on the S1 system. So instead of a GT2554, you can get the GT2860 or GT2560 for $200 extra. Either turbo is capable of the hp goal you have in mind.

Here are the results with the 3" enthuza exhaust and 3" enthuza cat from Begi.

The car was tuned by a professional car tuner and the max boost is now 0,95 bar (13,8 psi).

Max power is 191,5 kW (257 hp) at rear wheels
Max torque is 324 Nm (239 lb/ft) at rear wheels

I'd like to step back for a moment and reflect upon the situation we have here.

Marko's postcount is three. In the time between Post #1 and post #3 he's gone from a stock engine and a pile o' parts to posting a dyno chart showing 240 ft/lbs, not to mention that he's from Scandanavia and yet speaks English better than half of the folks here who live in the US.

Yeah, pretty astounding...

Looking good! Might need a fuel pump though.

255lph should be good enough :2cents:

Isn't it... Sorry about that. Why the lean spot at redline?

AFR is 12.0 flat across the pull.

Peak torque at 5000, peak HP at 6000. Good stuff.

What is your fuel octane rating, Marko?

Edit: At that post rate I should have been boosted at least 276 times by now. It's too bad I have so many other things that require my attention and money right now. It is a lot cheaper to post than to buy parts.:)

Appears right where they let off on it. Looks normal to me. Probably some poor tuning on high RPM in vacuum.

It's Shell V-Power that is over 99 octane (European standards) according to the Shell's adds

US octane rates are 4-5 point lower. So it's probably the same with the 95 US octane gas. Octane rating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marko -

Thanks for the reminder; "Don't mess with the quiet guy in the corner, he's up to something!"

Great results with very little commentary. But now would be a great time to post some pics of your build...

PS - +1 to Joe's endorsement!

You are the model poster to which all newbies will be judged.

Respect.

flier129 05-23-2009 10:44 AM

Damn, impressive. I was getting all excited after I got my turbo on and it started on the first try haha.

You sir, are the model "newb" member :)

Very nice numbers and I'm very jealous of that flat AFR line.
