Default Looking for basic greddy stage info

Hey guys,

I am thinking about the selling My 89 Supra Turbo and picking up my own miata (the one in my sig is really my wifes)I drive a lot and the way gas and insurance are I think I may be better off with my own Miata...

The Supra has BPU upgrades @12 PSI, so she should be close too 280-290 to the flywheel...
The problem is I dont want to sell the Supe and miss it too much.

My question is about the Greddy Kit.

I may DIY or buy a used Greddy kit and upgrade slowly.

Is there a Stage 1,2,3 etc chart for the greddy kit?

What should i do minumum and what can i expect 1/4 time and 0-60 time wise.

What is the basic kit with Bipes and full exhaust and I/c good for??

Thanks for your help...

Jason

www.********** has a lot of useful information about upgrading your greddy kit and what you should do to the car at each "stage" or how much more you want to increase your boost by
here you go

First off, know that the standard Greddy kit is only for the 1.6 liter Miatae, which in the US are 89-93. The 94+ cars use a 1.8 engine. You can buy manifolds to adapt a Greddy kit (Mitsubishi TD04H-15G) to this engine, but you'd be better off buying a dedicated 1.8 kit from Flyin' Miata or Bell Engineering at that point.

There's not really a "stage" system with the Greddy like you see with FM or Bell. The basic kit comes with a turbo, manifold, crappy downpipe, 12:1 fuel regulator (which is way too rich) and a few pipes. Typically, this will achieve 5 to 6PSI.

Fortunately, upgrading the system is not hard, and only as expensive as you want it to be. You can easily start with the base system and add from there without having to throw too much away.

First order of business is a new downpipe, cat, and exhaust. There's a guy named TurboTony on this forum who builds beautiful downpipes and cats (see this thread: http://tinyurl.com/hzb6p ). The Enthuza catback exhaust is pretty popular: http://www.enthuzacar.com/

There are a few folks on this list building and selling custom intercooler systems. Look around both here and in DIY. I am currently building my own with a $100 ebay intercooler, some light welding, and a few aluminum elbows.

Next is the engine management. Obviously you want some kind of ignition control, and better fuel management. You could purchase separate devices- a Bipes ACU for the ignition and a better quality AFPR for the fuel, but a lot of folks are using the new eManage ultimate piggyback computer, which for $500 gives you both fuel and timing control and lets you run *huge* injectors.

At this point, you add a $50 manual boost controller, and you're good for 12 PSI. This isn't going to get you to the 280 FWHP you're used to, but there are some dyno charts around here showing 190 or so at the wheels. Remember also that a Miata is more than 1,000 pounds lighter than your Supra. Chances are that by the time you get halfway through 1'st gear you won't miss it.

he has a 90 so its the 1.6 unless its been swaped. I reccomend looking around for the best deal on the kit if thats the way that you want to go. I just installed my kit, im running at 6psi. I love it more than my 87 N/A MK III supra that i sold to my brother after getting the miata.

Yes, but he stated that he's looking to purchase another one, because "the one in my sig is really my wifes".

Congrats on your install, by the way. I'm still waiting for my fuel injectors to get here, so the project is sort of on hold. I'm actually contemplating installing the manifold and turbo, but leaving the compressor disconnected and the stock intake in place, just to give myself something to do while I wait.

I hate being the guy who mentions this a lot, but don't forget about a new clutch and rear-end. Blue89, it looks like you've done some homework already, so you might know this.

The stock 1.6 clutch will not handle much boost. Most guys say the base greddy kit overpowers the stock clutch and you're slipping like crazy within a week of even moderate driving. A Spec/Exedy/ACT, etc... or similar is an almost immediate necessary upgrade. Somebody will probably chime in here and say they've been running the stock clutch for years now... but they are the exception. YOU WILL NEED A NEW CLUTCH!

If you plan on "big" boost, a 1.8 Torsen rear is a great investment, and becomes more "necessary" with better rubber. You can wait until you snap the 1.6, but for used Torsens available for $600-$800, you might as well do it with the initial install along with the clutch.

So. Clutch, Torsen, and base Greddy you can probably manage for around $2k... Now you've got a bulletproof drivetrain and are ready for fuel/spark/IC, etc...

Don't forget about the classifieds both here and at m.net. There are several used greddy kits currently for sale.

I am in the process of buying a greddy kit at the moment and I've been looking for "used" ones and it just doesnt seem like many people want to part with them unless they are moving on to bigger and better things or parting a car to sell. Thats gotta mean something Coming from a IS300 aftermarket, I'm loving the availability and cost of modifying my miata. Its actually passed my IS300 as car of choice when driving about. Well, except when its something like 100 degrees out.. because with my lightweight base model I gave up the A/C!

Hey guys,

Thanks for your help. Sorry for not responding I have been pretty busy.

Well I basically sold the Supra yesterday but am still very unsure if i made the right decision. (i actually have 2 weeks till I have to deliver the the buyer and i hate to do it but there is a chance i may try to get out of the deal----unless you guys can convince me that i have reall made the right decision...

With the base Greddy kit with an I/C and better DP and full exhaust max boost would be about 7psi am i right? What kind of whp, 1/4 and 0-60 times may i be looking at??

Hey Joe,

How fast would a miata be running 12PSI?
Can the stock engine handle 12PSI?

Thanks again

with the right products a base greddy kit can very safely put 15 psi. of boost on the 1.6 with all stock internals. The things you must address are: IC, BOV, guages, FPR, injectors, ECU (many go with emanage), exhaust (2.5 has been proven very effective but others have gone bigger) and a MBC to turn up the boost.

Hi BrokeEnthusiast,

I have a few of those items already.

I have an Audi TT coupe I/C - 2 actually - not sure they would be usable?

I have a VTA Bov - not sure if i should vent to atmosphere though?

I have a flying miata boost gauge

I think if i bought a used Greddy kit it should come with a FPR - what is the max boost on the stock greddy FPR?

What about injectors what are the stock ones capable of?

I am thinking of starting with the bipes - what is the max boost for that unit?

I have a turbo excess manual boost controller too.

Sorry for all the questions as you can see I am just starting out....
