Moar turbo questions.

Hello,
First off I drive a 93 Miata. Buying a 94-97 soon. Going to turbo it.
I have done my research so know that before complaining.
I've heard many different options such as:

1. Fm kit.
2. Fm kit no electronics w/megasquirt
3. ARTech stuff? Ms and turbo.

What else do I need? Say if I went option #2, is that all I need? Or is there seperate items?
I know I need the manifold, down pipe, piping, BOV, exhaust, fuel pump, intercooler, MS, turbo, but what else?

Also, from your view point, whats the best route to take? around 4-5k limit. Thanks for the help

First read this --->

https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...big-post-4288/

Then, read it again.

If you get FM kit no electronics, I believe you need the MS and that should be it.

*Edit --> FM No Electronics = no engine management (You use MS), No boost controller (MS used to control boost, so no need for that either) And no Fuel Injectors... Theres a lot of different options for injectors but it all depends on how deep your pockets are

IMO the best way to go would be peiceing the stuff together yourself... again depends on how deep your pockets are. If you buy mostly new, you will most likely go over your 4-5K budget. It will also take a lot longer to aquire all of the parts needed to put together a DIY setup in comparison to getting boxes full of everything you need from Flyin' Miata.

I am no expert so if I am off on anything here, someone please chime in and correct me lol

Read that, thank you. Great read. I heard piecing together is always cheaper. But with all this talk of blown turbo's, it kind of scares me. To many options especially being new to the f/I world

As with most things in the automotive project kingdom, it comes down to a)your ability and resourcefulness and b)the value of your time.

Are you willing to save a few bucks and search/wait for compatible used parts, spend (lots of) time learning the ins and outs of piecing together your own kit, including maintenance and tuning after the fact, and to find sometimes creative ways of making things work?

Or, would you prefer spending more dough in exchange for having a box show up on your doorstep with instructions and a 1-800 help line?

There are of course many other considerations to make, but this should be your first.

Mostly option B. mainly used car parts always scare me. 2nd I want it done by may-june

Where ya from?

Honda_ryder89 01-23-2013 01:49 AM

I am located in Missouri. So far my plan:
MS PNP 2, eBay fmic, ID 750cc, artech dp and manifold. Random BOV. Greddy 60 trim

Power goals?

#2, yes. Then you need exhaust, clutch, injectors, intercooler if you don't get one with the kit, wideband, boost controller if you want. Doable.

Or the ARTech stuff, you'll need to source all your plumbing as i don't think that comes with it.

Honda_ryder89 01-23-2013 04:42 AM

Erat, I'm not looking to go too big. I know with it being turbo'd I won't be disappointed. Maybe 150 is realistic? Not completely sure as of now, and I'm not a stickler on 'I want this much power and not a whp less.

Erat 01-23-2013 07:41 AM

If you want 150, shoot for 200. What i described is basically what i did.

I figure that number as a good one before things start to grenade.
Assuming you have a good tune, and know how to shift, ect.

94's have low compression ratio so you can squeeze a bit out of em.

BTMiata 01-23-2013 08:23 AM

200 is right around what I am shooting for.

My current plan is

t25/t28 - bought a chinacharger
Intercooler set-up
725cc ID Injetors
MS built by brain
ARTech everything... manifold, DP, Exhaust, Oil/Water lines
Walbro 190hp
Tial EWG (Don't trust the chinacharger's IWG)

There's so much more random things that are needed that you don't even think of. I have probably spent $200 so far on things I didn't think of initially lol

Braineack 01-23-2013 08:28 AM

do option two or three.

congrats on picking a 1.8L over a 1.6L; you are wise beyond your post count.

Why a fuel pump? Why spend so much on injectors but use a chinacharger(come at me vlad)? Clutch.

I assumed a fuel pump was recommended.... Maybe I has the dumb?

I am sorta using the chinacharger as a test dummy.... bought it cheap so I am using it to get started and when it dies I am going to pick up a garrett.

I just did a new clutcch/flywheel in October but it is OEM (I replaced it literally weeks before I decided to keep the car and go with a turbo set-up :vash:) I will be doing a flyin miata happy meal when it goes

Braineack 01-23-2013 09:03 AM

you dont quite need a fuel pump if your stocker is still in good shape.

Well it's the original so I figured it might be a good idea to swap it when I install my turbo parts next year. Got the pump w/ install kit for $90 from doap parts so it was cheap enough that I figured i'd just grab it lol

Erat 01-23-2013 09:19 AM

Alright.

I'm not a fan of spending more than i have to is why i question. :)

Gotcha.. I was just trying to think ahead and make sure I have a new one so it dosen't take a sh*t and leave me strandned.... The one in my car is intermittenly loud and I have been worried it might die but it's been doing that since I bought it in July so who knows lol

Honda_ryder89 01-23-2013 03:35 PM

So the FM no electronics is 3k.
Abe has DP, manifold, an exhaust for 1.5k. That means a $500 turbo and I'm still spending 1k less than the fm kit? Sounds good to me
