MSM Falling on its face....
So I recently purchase an 04 MSM Miata... Might of been a big mistake thus far.
When I purchased it, the car was running fine under load but when it went into boost would fall clean on its face. The car was throwing a P0304 code for misfire in the fourth cylinder. Well that was easily explainable via the cracked ignition coil. Where the plug goes into the coil was completely snapped so I just assumed 100$ coil and it would be good to go! Little background on the car.... Its got the Flying Miata Little Enchilada Kit installed by Track Dog Racing. Car starts right up, and as long as you stay out of boost it runs great! So I have changed the clearly broken ignition coil and the cleared the code, which has not returned.... However the car is still flat out dead in boost. The car builds boost nicely, and sounds great, but soon as it gets any boost under its belt its OVER. The car has an innovate PSB-1 wideband/boost controller installed by Track Dog Racing as well. The AFR cut is set at 13 and the boost cut at 9. The car has a turbosmart boost controller with the dial turned as far left as it will go, yet the peak boost is still around 9.... The factory boost controller is just hanging off the front of the motor not being used currently. I will say when I get on the throttle, the boost gauge reads "O2 Cut" on the top right as if the safemode is kicking on... I wanted to up the AFR Cut and Boost Cut to see if any difference but wanted to play it safe until I knew more. Anyone got any guesses/suggestions/idea/directions. I would truly take anything at this point to at least make it some what driveable.... I will be going to an MS3 setup but I've got other priorities before hand and I sure don't want to invest a bunch in a non-working car. Thanks, William P.S. I will be glad to supply any photos requested/more info as needed! |
welcome to every msm in the world. you have lots of learning to do.
megasquirt fixes all of that |
Get rid of it.... you can drop it off at my place. I'll pay for the gas too.

Sounds like its behaving as designed really.

Sounds like an MSM.
If TDR had their hands on it, i'd be double-checking their work, too. |
Check the map sensor and purge valve that have vacuum lines running to them along the passenger firewall. Also clean the MAF sensor as well.

As the others have said, this is how an MSM is supposed to work. This car holds the title for world's crappiest factory turbo application. The stock ECU is not workable and will not allow you to boost more than 9lbs. On a cold day here, my DP and intake having MSM would make that much boost by 4500 rpms and then hard fuel cut. Super frustrating the day I drove it home on the highway and could not pull my brother's 3.2 Acura TL because it was too cool out that day and my car was making too much boost. I never did get around it. I only avoided the hard cut on hot days with the manual boost controller set to max bleed. You'll need a full standalone ECU and a better turbo to make decent, consistent power. And by then you'll wish you had a regular NB and gone DIY saving you time and money.

Reasons why he likes the MSM.
Otherwise it has no redeeming qualities. He likes good trim. Don't we all? |
My one and only reason for loving the msm is that it's easier to pass smog/inspection in ca

Most put their cars back to stock every 2 years for 1 day.
Some know a guy who knows a guy. Some register their cars in other states. It's a matter of which loophole you want to take, none of them are cheap or convenient. |
My second MSM mod was Reverant's MS3 Basic. First was a roll bar.
Do the MS3 with 650cc + injectors, boost solenoid, then never look back. Those will transform your car. |
