NA vs FI , before and after, low end talk.
Just wondering whats your before and after performance (low end) Vaccum driving. Not the boosted portion.
Did anyone had a big difference after you turboed your car? - lack of thottle responds? - lost of power before boost? |
I feel less power b4 boost because my timing is now 8*, where as I had it at 16* b4 FI.

interesting question for me since i never had boost, do you feel that is the only reason your feeling less power, and if you had some kind of EMU you could run 16* and have it retard at higher RPM, rigth...i mean please correct if im wrong, i am a newb at thie phenomena called boost(aka Nirvana)

Why is this even a question? Are you having trouble with your car?
Throttle response is the same. Power in vacuum is the same as I run 14 degrees timing and pull 6 with a Bipes. Once the turbo starts spooling (probably around 3000 and into boost at 4000) there is obviously more power. |
In my mind, it feels like the low end is better. I think it's because I finally got rid of the stock exhaust and catalytic converter as well as the stock intake arm/box and AFM.

it's barely out of boost, but it's completely transparent below the boost threshold. |
I felt like I picked up a little torque out of boost I would assume with the change in exhaust. Don't have anything other than my ass to back that up though.
Even with the slow spooling greddy turbo I'm not out of boost for very long. |
very interesting feedback...i was affraid that i may lose some pre-boost power since im in love with this lady called auto-x, and a significant loss of power in low RPM would make me mad...but based on what you guys are saying im no longer worried...damn im running out of excuses to boost my baby

In some tight corners on the course you'll be waiting for that boost to kick in with the stock setup. |
A lot of the SM2 Miatas I used to autox with have pulled their turbos in favor of blowers.
Mimi - I felt a great loss of throttle response after installing my kit, but I blame that on going from 14* to 6* before I got, and later pulled, my bipes. The bipes allowed me to bump the timing back to 14* and I pulled to 10* (WI) in boost. That gave a lot of the low-end back. |
The turbo with out a doubt will make you faster around the cones. I went from a mid pack at best finisher to top 10 (RAW) after installing the turbo and going to v710s. With 13" wheels I have no problem being in boost a LOT. A few upgrades will make the td04 spool pretty damn good. Besides, when was the last time you spend any significant amount of time below 4K while autocrossing?
My big problem now is traction, but thats a FUN problem to have. |
sorry guys i just realized that this is the greddy section, ooops...
Harv-im not using a greaddy set up, im brewing something myself...i got carried away with such a great post...sorry again kotomile-i was debating the two for a while, i AM going the snail way, lol jayc72-im typically in the top 1/4 to 1/3 now on street tires, im not expecting to be the fastest, but i would really like it... :) top 10 would make me very happy... |
If you do go turbo for autox, make sure to keep spool/response/"linearity" in mind. Those three factors are what caused my Jax autox buddies to switch to Uberchargers vs their turbos. The turbos they selected weren't the quick-spooling kind, which didn't help at the Buccaneer Region's tight courses (a lot of club4AG influence down there).
|
auto-x is not the only factor, even though probably the most important..
|
With proper fuel and timing control (EMU, MS, etc) as opposed to bandaids like static timing retard and 300cc injectors on the stock ECU/AFM, driveability with a turbo car in non-boosted conditions is 100% identical to stock. The turbo does not present a significant restriction to either intake or exhaust, and the fuel mixture and ignition timing should not be altered at all.
|
I did an autox with 100% miatas. I was the second faster time of the day and the only turbo miata. only one that beat me was a stock 06.
