Need some help with a shopping list..

Lets preface with hello, I am a car noob.

I had owned a much more expensive car before my miata and just didnt have the money to do the things I wanted to do!

So I bought my 94' Miata.

Now for my plans, someone tell me if they're unrealistic..

I want to turbo my car.
  • Budget: 4500$
  • 200WHP
  • As little DIY as possible, I am untrained so I have to get it done somewhere else...

I was looking at the Begi S2 with the MSPNP. Besides the $3,800 price, this leaves me with about 600$ or so within my budget. I know I will need injectors + WB and gauges. Should I go down to the S1? What else will I need?

Don't eat me up guys, everyone has to start somewhere :)

I see a clutch in your future.

ACT Heavy Duty with a street disc will suit you well.

Yeah i'd imagine I'd be having some problems with the stock clutch.

But thats like what 400 shipped or so?

What do I need on the electronics side, to get the turbo running healthy and safely? Will MSPNP + WB be enough?

Or you could do the clutchnet equivalent, though it's not guaranteed to work it's cheaper. I don't know exactly which that would be.

Electronics-wise that is all you need. Go with Rx-7 460cc or 440cc injectors.

UrbanSoot 05-21-2008 01:56 AM

here is your list:

begi s kit w/ 2554 - $1815
mspnp upgrade - $600? (call begi to make sure)
460cc injectors - $200 w/ cleaning
lc-1 wideband - $200
enthuza budget - $359
act hd clutch kit - $350

spend the rest on hookers or send it to me.

I'll have to add an intercooler to that. I live in FL. Aka it will be 90000 Kelvin this summer.

Where can I find the RX7 injectors?

Bryce 05-21-2008 02:03 AM

Intercooler is a must.

A quick zip up to 90 mph today in the Texas heat had my temp gauge at the 2 o'clock position with I/C and stock cooling.

Do you plan on tracking it? If so you'll need to upgrade the cooling system too.

www.rx7club.com

Then send them off to get cleaned at injector rehab (awesome people)

Or the classifieds on here but they usually go for more.

There's a section on injectors in this thread https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4288

Big ass radiator and clutch are definitely a must, along with an intercooler.

And if you don't want to tune it yourself, you might want to factor in a professional tune of your MSPNP.

Here's what I would do....
begi s kit w/ 2554 - $1815
mspnp upgrade - $600? (call begi to make sure)
460cc injectors - $200 w/ cleaning
lc-1 wideband - $200
enthuza budget - $359 <--- forget that, we have a local deal for $320 for a 3"
act hd clutch kit - $350
Than add another $200-250 for an intercooler.

Im very local to you and there is quite a few boosted Miatas in South Fla. Let me know how I can help.

Yeah that was definately on my list. Well if this all goes right, I should be turboed by the end of summer.

I'm going to order the Begi asap so I dont have to wait long on fabrication time ect in order to get it all together.

Stein 05-21-2008 08:32 AM

Make sure you buget for install labor for at least the clutch, maybe the exhaust at the same time. You said you weren't a DIY guy. Are you going to install the turbo kit or have it installed as well?

PMd about the exhaust. But also, that 200-250 for an intercooler, where can I find that. Is that an ebay special?

Going to install it all myself. By DIY I meant not already made. I'd like to avoid as much fabrication as possible.

samnavy 05-21-2008 08:47 AM

^Great point... labor is a bitch no matter where you go.

And I'd hold off on the bigger radiator for now... you can upgrade later if needed. Some cars do fine on the stock cooling system on the street. Mine has never come close to overheating in the Virginia summer. I run the OEM automatic radiator, dual-fan mod, no A/C, no undertray or nose funnel. Coolant temps never get above 200*.

But others are right... intercooler is a must. The good thing about the GT25r is that it's perfectly efficient at 200whp... intake temps will be very low, combine that with an IC, and you might not need a big radiator.

I also highly recommend a stainless oil-feed line for your BegiS kit if you go that route.

For gauges, a boost gauge is all you really need.

Yup, get an ebay interccoler,
piping from http://www.mazzurisuper.com/shop/htm...gMandrelBends/
and couplers and clamps from www.siliconeintakes.com

I think I am going to dish out the extra 300$ or so for the begi IC. More expensive, but should save me some headaches. Thanks everyone a ton for all the help.

Zabac 05-21-2008 09:31 AM

You know, that's a very good point you make there, I can tell you have been in similar scenarios before, however, the ebay IC's cxracing sells are proven and work very well, even though the Begi ones look way cooler. It is your choice after all and you won't go wrong either way.

As far as your list goes, I will try to help even though we are polar oposites, I prefere to build as much myself as possible, lol.

Stick with the Begi S like everyone tells you, it is a great starting point with a nice upgrade path if you choose to take it, and the entry price is nice as well for such a proven company.
A radiator and clutch should be a must for any turbo car unless your car just doesn't over heat like Sams.
Your best bet on intercoolers will be to wait to catch something in the classifieds here, they often go for around $200 with the piping included.
What type of diff. do you have, if it is open, you may want to look into getting an LSD in there, you will need it with 200hp.
Lastly, do not forget regualr maintnance on your present motor. Things like timing belt, waterpump, front and rear main seal (will be easy to get to while doing clutch), CAS o-ring, new pugs&wires, etc. Adding boost can lead to things failing if they were on their last leg, so it may be better to knock them out before hand.
Cheers and welcome
