new to it all

just joined the board as im recently aquired a 91 miata with the greddy turbo.

few initial concerns, manifold is split between each runner, is that how its made or are those cracks?
seems there is some rattling coming from the turbo in lower rpms, normal or damage?

basically what should i check to make sure its all properly working. driving wise care feels good, turbo spools up to 5psi as according to boost gauge and seems to be making power.

even tough previous owner said clutch was replaced it seems to be slipping at full throtle in high rpms, is a stock replacement too weak for turbo application?

last but not least in process of trying to add a IC to the set up seems like piping will be pretty easy to DIY except for the piping going to the throtle body so what are my options?

thanks for any help,
ps new to miatas also, previous honda junkie with plenty of mechanic experience but not with turbo set ups.

Those "cracks" are relief cuts purposely made so the mani doesn't crack. Remove the crossover tube in inspect the compressor wheel... wiggle the shaft and see how much free motion (side-side and front-back) and report back.

IC's are easy, lots of options... **** has a bad (and well documented) history around here... you've been told. My advice is a standard eBay 25x7 IC and 2.5" piping kit and a hacksaw.

If you plan to turn up the boost any, you'll need a BOV (must recirculate). You'll also want a new fuel fitler immediately and test your fuel pump... need a fuel pressure gauge (that is a good idea anyways if you're going to stick with a bandaid setup). There are 1.8 tan-top injectors for sale around here all the time. Some tan-tops and a Walbro 190lphHP will fuel you for 200whp.

You'll also want to verify your timing... should be 6* base for a non-IC Greddy. Do research on Bipes and O2clamp.

+1, jimmmb pipes almost killed my motor. True story. They came apart, and a rock actually got sucked up and lodged into my throttle body causing the motor to rev up by itself.

I consider myself lucky.

Fuck ji mb.

hold on, i searched on **** and got a couple hits, no mention about any issues with his pipes?
i never really got why people use the *** instead of his name??

i just bought a starion IC kit from him, planning to install tomorrow... anything you wanna mention to me, as obviously I am missing something?
you mean his pipes sit to close to the ground?
that can be resolved by just shortening them a bit?

No, I meant fitler. A fitler is a very common upgrade to the fuel system... ask around.

mx5dude69 07-25-2008 07:57 PM

ok i am sorry. searched again, and got my answer.
to be honest, the pipes welding seems ok. friend of mine who owns a shop inspected them and said they looked fine. maybe he upgraded his work? i guess i'll be reporting on how the whole set up behaves. sorry again
