New turbo install problems

After listening to several knowledgeable people I put together a turbo "kit" for my 2000 Miata. Got it all installed and running on stock ECU. However, When I push the accelerator down the car hesitates, stumbles like it was too lean and finally goes up to 8 psi. Pretty much undriveable unless you really baby the throttle. I'm using the stock MAF and IAT that came with car. My AFR gauge goes all over the place when this bog down situation occurs and is basically unusable/unreliable.

I was told that car would be fine up to about 8 psi with stock fuel system, injectors and ECU. My thoughts are leaning toward ECU issues. Megasquirt would be nice but expensive.

Is my assumption that you can turbo a 1.8 with boost restricted to 8 psi with stock fuel, stock ECU etc. wrong?

What suggestions would members have to resolve these issues?

Thanks

Just let it rev out. The sock ecu will "learn"

its cause you're running too little boost
crank it up. it clears up past 10

They do not like you. They are not your friends.
If you are serious about running 8psi, you just did more damage to your motor than you are ready to pay for.
Please tell us more.

A proper standalone ECU is more important to your turbo build than your turbo is. If you can't afford the ECU, you can't afford to turbo.

Pretty much undriveable? Well yeah that tends to happen when you try to run 8 psi of boost on the stock tune and fueling. Do you go into job interviews in a wife beater? No, you prepare beforehand with all the necessary suit/tie/watch/shoe combinations that fits the situation, why should modding cars be any different?

Here I can help:

MSLabs Megasquirt MS3 Basic

Flow Force 640cc EV14 Injectors

Is this the same Tom that invented e-cool? Because you sound just about as knowledgeable.

In this order:
  1. Never listen to those people again, at all, for any reason
  2. Stop driving the car, at all, for any reason
  3. Buy a standalone ECU, wideband O2 sensor, and larger fuel injectors
  4. Install them
  5. Have the car professionally tuned OR learn how to tune and tune the car

Go read the tens of thousands of posts on here and get half a clue before you blow shit up.

Ten posts in and I'm the first one to say this? You guys are slacking!

I believe the proper terminology on this forum is "SEARCH, NOOB!"

Who ever suggested it's ok to run boost on stock ecu without anything extra is an idiot.
