New Turbo Kit in the works.
Hey all, just wanted to give everyone a heads up that i am helping a shop in greenville, NC develop a turbo kit on the miata. I will NOT be selling the kit myself or making any money off this. The shop sells custom turbo kits for other cars already. If interest is show they plan to market the kit and become a sponsor.
Here are the details so far(#### mods at miata.net deleted them)
I dont have a 1.6L motor to work with right now so no 1.6 manifold yet, and quite honestly the 1.6 doesnt have as much potential as the 1.8 anyway, so you wouldnt make the most of it. 1.6 option will be available eventually, but its much further away.
The vendor that will be selling the kit is called Top Speed Performance out of Greenville, NC. Their website is www.topspeedperformance.net.
The kit will include a tubular t304 schedule 10 stainless steel manifold, with all the welds guaranteed for life. Im designing this equal-length to get the most out of it, with a very gradual collector design to maximize flow. The turbo will be a GT 30 water cooled ball bearing turbo with a TiAL stainless exhaust housing that v-band clamps to the manifold, so NO turbo bolts. The turbo can be upgraded or downgraded according to your personal tastes. All the intercooler piping and intercooler, plus nomex braided oil lines, and v-band piping couplers will be included.
There is an option to include an aluminum radiator as well.
Youre looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5K dollars when all said and done, but very worth it. It leaves a LOT of room to grow and you wont spend extra money upgrading when you decide you suddenly want 20 psi.
Check out the website, and look at their ford focus kit. The focus motor is very similar to the miata motor in terms of bhp and displacement, and that kit made 265 hp at 12 psi on a stock drivetrain.
The kit will not include engine management but they offer a free tune if you bring your car out to the shop.
Looks like we're a few months away from completion, im still tweaking the manifold to maximize flow.

Heres a dyno of a similar kit. This is a FORD FOCUS. LOL if the focus is making this power, think about how much the miata will make.

I made 257 rwhp at 9.5 psi. and I built the kit myself in my garage.

As mentioned, for that money, there are established choices.
For instance, Bell Engineering's S4 kit with every option, plus the larger GT3071R and XEDE engine management only comes to $5614. That's more than your 4-5k price, but that does include everything down to the injectors and standalone engine management.

There is almost no demand for a high HP kit like that. There is however, a demand for the parts. Sell the manifold for example. I promise you could sell those. Make a nice reroute setup and you could sell it. Get greedy and make it all super expensive and nobody will buy anything. For example, make a nice tubular manifold with external gate setup for 500 and you will sell them. Make them for 400 and you will have cornered the market. Sell them for 1000 and.... you won't be selling very many.

However, you should know that there is virtually no "tuning" to be done with the Miata ECU. There is no commercial equivalent of the Hondata system, for example, nor is there a socketed and easily replaceable PROM. There has been some very interesting work done lately in reverse-engineering the code, but I find it unlikely that this will yield a commercially viable mainstream product.
Putting aside rising-rate FPRs, engine management for forced induction on the Miata generally falls into three categories:
1- Simple, inexpensive, single-function piggyback devices, such as the Voodoo box, Bipes ACU, etc.)
2- Fully featured piggybacks, such as the EMU and the Xede. These allow the use of properly sized injectors.
3- Full standalone ECUs. Megasquirt, MSPnP, Link, Hydra, etc...
I'll add a +1 to what others have said. I think your biggest market here is going to be the sale of individual components- namely the manifold, downpipe, and maybe the Tial turbine housing. People who want to buy "idiot-proof" complete kits are already being well served by FM and Bell, but the sort of stuff you're describing sounds like it would well serve a small but relatively hardcore niche of DIY'ers here.

Well, with competition will come lower pricing all around...eventually...however a new kit that costs more than whats out there now with less to offer (engine/fuel management being the big part of that) it won't really do anything to help us at all..If this "kit" could be made at a lower more competitive price I think people would be more welcoming of it.
