Newb with a 1.6, yea i searched...

Well here is what i'm working with. It's a 1990 1.6L Miata. No rust, frame is solid, engine puts out 180psi on each cylinder, shifts smooth, etc... Not bad for 150K miles.

This car is a winter project this year and i'm going to boost it. From what i have seen and read, miata + turbo = teh pwnage... and miata + supercharger = teh failz.

Im pretty set on a BEGi shanghai kit for it but one thing i cant figure out is why do people love the 1.8 so much more than the 1.6? From what i understand they are very similar motors, so why are they so much better for boost than the 1.6? Everyone says just go get a 1.8 but give no explanation to why its so much better to turbo.

Also my friend has a miata that has a blown ring. He wan'ts to turbo his as well just like mine but we have to rebuild his motor first. Does anyone make a complete rebuild kit? and maybe a top end spring, valve, and cam upgrade?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I'll be nice and not tell you to search. More displacement the faster the turbo will spool. Your friend can pick up an entire 1.6 for $200 more than likely. Also the 1.8's heads, especially the 99 head, flows better.

thanks for the info. I knew that more displacement made the turbo spool faster but i didn't think that .2L would make a huge difference considering that i will only be pulling around 250 - 300 hp.

The internals in a 1.6 must be equally as strong as a 1.8? if the only benefit is a better flowing head then i might as well stay with the 1.6. It's not like im making a hard core race car that every HP counts in.

You didn't search for jack squat you lazy fucking noob.

No replacement for displacement.
1.8's have stronger other parts like brakes and rear end.
etc etc etc.

Say "I searched" again after asking basic shit and I'll skullfuck you then make you felch yourself f.aggot

From my experience with a 1.6 and a 1.8 there also seemed to be a lot more turbo parts available for the 1.8

Thats not what i meant dude chill. I was talking about stronger ENGINE INTERNALS. i know i have to swap rear ends if i turbo the 1.6.

Go ahead and type in 1.6 vs 1.8 in the search box you cant because VS is too short. So i tried "1.6 1.8" and nothing. Also went back 5 pages with Cntrl+F to find anything and found only people saying "Put in a 1.8 its pro"

Fortunately i found what i was looking for on Post 18 in this thread. by searching.

1.6 with a small turbo has no real difference in spool between the 1.8.

No replacement for displacement. 1.8's typically make another 20-40hp than a 1.6 with the same setup.

There are plenty of sweet 1.6 cars out there. If you know what you are doing you will make the power you want either way. If I blow my built 1.6 I wouldn't bother swapping to a 1.8, maybe a 6.0 or or 6.2 though.

18psi 10-18-2010 08:55 PM

You could make big power with a 1.3 if you wanted to. The key here is "area under the curve" or whatever the hell its called. Torque. It makes the car so much more pleasant to drive.

weezerfan5487 10-18-2010 09:17 PM

Man, you sure are set on making the 1.6 to be this equal engine. Listen, I'm positive that if you had the 1.8 you'd instantly think differently about them being equal.

The 1.6 and 1.8 use the same connecting rods, so they will handle similar forces. They both have forged steel cranks. They both have cast pistons.

The 1.6 cars have weak rear differentials.
