oil pressure question?
ok first off i know it might just be my oil pressure gauge in the car may be reading wrong. ok i have noticed that my oil pressure gauge reads almost at 0 when at idle when the car gets hot. then at about 4k rpm in 5th it only reads at 30. so does this meen my oil pump might need to be replaced? also at idle my exhaust blows smoke which is oil. but if i push the pedal up to about 1500 rpm the oil pressure gauge jumps to what i believe would be 15 and the oil smoke stops coming out the exhaust. i have 10w30 castrol syntec blend in it now. i plan on putting in some 20w50 in the morning and seeing if it makes a difference. but does it sound like what any of your cars have done? is that what the gauge should read? i have a 91 greddy turbo. im still hitting 5lbs boost. if the gauge should read that and its not my oil pump then i guess its my turbo so if so what is the least for cost but decent work turbo rebuild shop?

air bubbles? mine has this problem when i need an oil change... i have a headgasket leak (small) hopefully after i fix it i wont have to worry anymore. I seem to have less and less oil change intervals now.

Disconnect the pipe from the turbo compressor outlet and feel around inside it with your finger. If it's oily then you need to start thinking about a turbo rebuild. It's possible that oil could be seeping out the turbine side only, but less likely and almost impossible to determine in situ. It could also very well be rings, or perhaps (though less likely) even valve guides.
As to the oil pressure, if the gauge is in fact giving you an accurate reading then it's way too low. With the engine cold, you should see 30PSI at idle, 60-90 PSI at 3k. When the oil is hot, I'd expect 10-20PSI idle, 45-60 PSI at 3k. If you don't have a mechanical oil pressure gauge handy, I'd suggest paying a visit to a local mechanic and having them put one on to verify what the pressure really is. Just make sure they know that the hole is 1/8" BSP, not 1/8" NPT. |
so joe were would you suggest for me to go to? i live in elcajon? also im pretty certain its time for another rebuild. the reason is i know there is oil in my pipes. but the oil pressure thing concerns me because it has read that same way ever since i hooked up the turbo.

try changing your oil to mobil 1 10w30, syntec is junk. also clean the contacts on your OPG sensor. try these 2 things and report back.
|
another thing, is your feed line coming off the block on the driver's side or a T on the OPG sensor fitting?
|
Use a Mazda Millenia filter. It fits, is larger, flows better. My op was 15@idle and 20 after using that filter and now 25 after switching to 2050 synthetic.
|
feed line is coming off the block. i will try the filter and 20 50 royal purple tommorrow i will report back. then on monday i decide new turbo or better front mount. i believe i fucked up my turbo due to my piping kept popping off during drifting and i wouldnt get off it when it did and i think i might have over spun the turbo so im thinking new turbo but i think the pressure should be higher.

don't think Royal Purple is in order
try something cheap but good like Rotella (I love that shit, $14 for a 4qt jug of Synthetic at WalMart; been using it a lot lately) or if you're ballin go with the mobile1 which is slightly more expensive. |
so your saying switch to full synthetic?
|
royal purple or bust everything else does not keep up on my car. From my experience anyway.

RP is garbage.

Contains moly.

So far Royal Purple is the only oil that doesn't thin out alot on my car. I have tried Amsoil, Mobil 1, Q, Castrol and a few others, they all thinned and left me with less than 15psi at warm idle. With Royal Purple it stays around 20-25psi. The car by the way has 61k on it and does not leak or burn any oil.
|
Personally I just use any 20w50 synthetic I can find. With RP I can't see if the oil is dirty or not. It looks dark when it comes out of the bottle. Plus I tend to stay away from "cult products". Go read some tests. RP isn't that great. Mobil-1 scores better, hell even Castrol scores better in some tests. If you want 'good' oil use diesel truck oil. Anything else has been 'tainted' by the EPA.

I'd been contemplating the switch as well- currently I use M1 0W40. Which weight of RP are you other turbo folks running?

so why would the molly hurt us?

um well i did rp today with the milenia filter and well the oil pressure is back were it should be but turbo is still blowing smoke so time for a new turbo.
