People with RX-7 intercoolers...
 

Can you post some pictures or describe how you mounted yours in the front of the radiator? I have purchased a **** RX-7 intercooler partial kit and I want to mount my intercooler in a somewhat professional manner. :)

I will probably use some aluminum angle and or flat bar purchased from Home Depot or something similar. I wanted to hear from you guys to see what you have done and to get some ideas.

Any help will be appreciated.

i used the brackets that came with his kit and bent them and redrilled em a little, and it worked great. My digicam is dead, but i'll post pics when i get a new one.

Hmmm... Mine didn't come with any brackets. Probably because I bought it from a third party. I'm sure that I will be able to figure out something once I get it hung in there and get the piping hooked up, but it would be nice to see some pictures of someone else's set-up.

Thanks. I found that in a search and pretty much read through the thread, but it just looks like the guy had it held in there with wire or something. I didn't see any neat well engineered brackets or anything to inspire me.

You'll come to see why lots of people here prefer the zip-tie method.

It looks like you could make two long L-shaped brackets that attach up top, they could be bolted into the two top mounting holes on the sides of the intercooler.

Yeah... I was hopeing to hang it from the top with some brackets like you say, but then brace off to the lower two holes somewhere down low. Good thing I've got a back-up Miata and a Jeep to drive while I sort all of this out.

I guess I'll take some pictures along the way as I build up everything. I plan on starting to demo everything tonight, and I will also be painting the piping with black krinkle paint.

Ice cold beer, a Miata up on jack stands in the garage and a wrench in hand... It doesn't get much better than that.

It's how I did mine, I had some scrap aluminum and just bent it into shape. Granted I had a screw hole right there for it, but you get the idea.

I took some quick pics of the mounting I did with Jim's hangers. They're just aluminum flat stock. The pics on the driver's side came out well but the passenger's side hanger didn't. The driver's side is bolted through the lower hanger on the intercooler and is about 10 inches in length while the passenger's side hanger bolts through the upper hanger on the intercooler and is only 6 inches in length. I was able to use existing holes on the car to mount the straps.

I really think a lot of the weight is carried by the piping itself and the straps just kinda keeps it in place.

I guess great minds think alike. :) I was painting my pipes tonight [With black crinkle paint.] and in between coats I was looking at the intercooler and the front of the Miata. I came up with a plan and then I come upstairs and lo and behold your post is very similar to what I plan on doing. :bowdown:

I am going to buy some 3/4" aluminum flat bar like I use to make my Ferrari grill on my '92 B&T and use it to fabricate brackets to hang the intercooler down from the top of the radiator cowl by the two upper intercooler brackets. Then I am going to stabilize the intercooler by attaching straps similar to the way you have them done from the bottom intercooler brackets to the two bolts in the front of the air intake opening.

Then I have utilized all four mounting points on the intercooler and it is supported vertically and horizontally.

haha i was going to do that too, but my friend did that and one of the zip ties broke and the IC piping got too close to the belt, and melted his belt off. so i just made a cheap bracket. costed 16 dollars and a lot of bending and cutting
