Pre-Greddy-Install Questions
Ok guys, I will soon be buying the Greddy kit because I'm wanting a little more "oomph" out of my car. I'm not really looking for massive gains, I just want the Miata to have the power I think it SHOULD have had from the factory. I have a couple of questions though.
1.) Is it NECESSARY to retard the ignition timing? I've never messed with timing even on a single-cam motor, let alone a dual-cam. What's the easiest way to do this? 2.) I'm assuming I WILL have to run premium gasoline after installing the Greddy kit? (I've had turbo vehicles before) 3.) Is the Greddy kit complete? Or will I have to go around rounding up parts for a month before installing it? 4.) What clutch is recommended to go with the basic Greddy kit? 5.) How will this kit affect the reliability and longevity of my car's engine? This one is a very important question. |
1- No. If you use methanol injection and an intercooler, you can probably run stock timing. Otherwise the engine will likely perish. However it's amazing easy and has nothing to do with the number of cams. Just loosen the lockbolt on the CAS (Cam Angle Sensor) and rotate it. It's the round thing sticking out of the back of the head, beside the ignition coils. Just like in Ye Olden Tymes, when Distributors Roamed the Earyth.
2- Yes. 3- It's complete for 5 PSI, except for: BKR7E spark plugs (one step colder), new oil and filter, and other small maintenance-type items. This was the subject of a long and recent thread. Read: https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=12895 4- Stock will be fine at 5 PSI. I'm running an ACT Stage 1, and it's holding fine at 12 PSI. 5- Impossible to say. If you install it wrong, the engine's remaining life will be very brief indeed. If your engine already has low compression, it'll die much more quickly under boost. If your engine is healthy to begin with and you install everything correctly and run good synthetic oil, you may turn out to be one of those guys years from now who starts a thread titled "My engine blew up last night- at 340,000 miles." |

Unless you have a device that will retard it for you as boost goes up, yes you will. You use a timing light and move the CAS on the back of the cam. 2.) I'm assuming I WILL have to run premium gasoline after installing the Greddy kit? (I've had turbo vehicles before) Yes. 3.) Is the Greddy kit complete? Or will I have to go around rounding up parts for a month before installing it? Yes. Although you'll want to cut the manifold, and perhaps want to swap out the bolts with better ones. 4.) What clutch is recommended to go with the basic Greddy kit? Stock can be fine. I have a slightly used and never abused Spec stage 2 clutch for sale if you're interested. 5.) How will this kit affect the reliability and longevity of my car's engine? This one is a very important question. |

This one is a very important question. 2) Yes 3) It comes with everything you need to run about 5.5psi, however a lot of people replace the drain line it comes with by drilling and tapping the pan, its up to you really. 4) Sometimes stock holds fine, sometimes it doesnt.. I personally use ACT xtreme but it may be overkill for what you want i'm not sure 5) General knowlege is its minimal, specially at that boost/power level |
