Questions about mildly building an engine.

Would it be worth it, when mildly building an engine to get the Billet Main Caps and having my engine line bored for it?

Its about a 1000 upgrade, but does it really need to be done?

Projected plans so far:

-Belfab H-beam rods - $300
-Knife-edge, lighten and balance crank - $300
-HKS Bead Metal Head Gasket MAZDA Miata 1990-1993 ; Engine Code: B6ZE Thickness(mm): 2 Bore(mm): 80 Compression Ratio: 8.72 - $200
-New OEM 9.5:1 pistons - $(?) where can I get these?
-MiadaRoaster Billet steel oil pump gears
* $300 inner and outer gears
* $110 new pump supplied by us
* $50 machining
* $10 shipping
* $470 total

Is that all that needs to be done to the bottom end, or should I get the main caps and put those in?

Thanks for putting up with my stupid questions!
John

knife edging the crank and billet mains will be useless to you. Also no real reason for the oil pump gears in a "mild" build.

For a mild build you would do well to just get the rods and maybe new pistons only if you needed them. Also while its aparts, new bearings. Beyond that you can start tacking on all kinds of cost for little things you might want to replace. Also, you need to factor in installation costs.

Go big or go home. Spend that extra 1k and have yourself a beast. are you building this for na or FI?

neogenesis2004 06-28-2007 12:23 AM

1k isnt going to build you a beast, trust me.

Slidin'Miata916 06-28-2007 12:25 AM

If your talking to me, I meant, that "extra" 1k, so about 2k ;)

mild build:

HP Engine Kit
Complete Gasket Set
Cometic Head Gasket
Wiseco Forged Pistons (78.5mm bore) and (8.5-1 or 9.5-1 comp ratio)
ROSS Performance Rings
Performance Wrist Pins
TOGA HP Main Bearings
TOGA HP Rod Bearings
Thrust Washers
Timing Belt
Expansion Plugs
+
Belfab Rods
----------
$1239

you could save a bunch with OEM pistons, higher then OEM qualtiy rings, stock bore and a hoane job; and still have a block that can take a bunch of abuse.

Wow.....Seriously......Thats hella worth it. Im gonna show this list to my local Motor shop....

Where to get OEM pistons and HP Rings? (For a 1.6)

Braineack 06-28-2007 09:35 PM

gave link above should have it all.

Who's got a crankshaft?

SOL General 06-28-2007 11:35 PM

ok So far....

I have:
Belfab H Beam Rods $320
HP Piston Rings (R3074) $88
OEM Pistons (Topline?) (PAMA9S) $136
Freeze Plug Set (EPSMA9) $36
HP Main and Rod Bearings (TOGACOMBO-MAZ02) $95
Knife-edge crank (Why not?) $300
New billet Oil Pump and gears (I hear its a weak point) $470
Hone? Any body have a round about price?
Assembly? Couldnt I do it myself? If not I know a couple guys who could put together an import engine blindfolded.

Then I will be doing to the head:
Port, Clean, Polish $980
1MM Oversize Valves $400
Valve and retainer set from FM $366

To put it all together. APR bolts and studs.

Running 15+ psi on a TDO4 19T greddy kit?

Sounds good? Missing Anything?

build a 1.8. I wouldn't spend all that money to still have a 1.6.

SOL General 06-28-2007 11:44 PM

Lol, whats the fun of having the fastest 1.6l Miata with a 1.8l engine

neogenesis2004 06-29-2007 12:14 AM

1.6.....1.8, its really not THAT much difference when you strap on a turbo.

well, it is 12.5% more volume to squish into the combustion chamber and that might ammount to 20-30hp at the same boost levels and a bit more grunt to spool it up.

honeydesean 07-01-2007 12:54 AM

Yea, I'm sure we all get that the added displacement is helpful but a full 1.6-1.8 swap isn't that cheap. The 1.6 isn't a bad motor, and there are a lot easier ways than an entire engine swap to make up for a 20-30hp difference.

besides, a .2 liter upgrade has never really interested me. now something in the way of a 5.0L engine... :D (but again, not cheap)

Actually....Can be cheap. If anyone needs t5 trannys, or 5.0 motors, let me know. I can find them pretty cheap most of the time since I have had 2 Fiftys in the past. then the kit is 4k. and people sell their monster miatas for 20k....I really want to invest in this and flip the car, but dont have the 4k to start with...

Al Hounos 07-01-2007 01:14 PM

it only costs a little more than a 1.6, is like a 240cc advantage, and it gives you the option of using a NB head.....

Yes yes.....1.8 has MUCH more potential. Besides.....
There is no replacemnt for displacement.
