Default Ref. Ticket with Begi kit + MS PNP

I have a 93 miata with begi S-3. I got pulled over by a CHP and he poped my hood and gave me a ref ticket. I am in california, I am currently running rx-7 550cc injectors, MS PNP - no fuel pressure regulator - GM IAT - I WILL NOT PASS SMOG or Ref. FOR SURE. Peeps in CA. I need HELP! What do I need to do to make my car pass?

I think you can turn down the boost, go back to a stock ECU and slap on a BEGI RRFPR and get the EO from Corky

It is a Referee ticket, In california if you are caught with aftermarket parts under you hood you will have to goto a referee to check on emissions and stuff..i know the begi is smog legal but not the ms pnp and all the other extras...

Do they plug in the ODB port? Could you visually make it look like the stock Begi-S kit with the RRFPR, but block the vacuum source so it is not increasing the fuel pressure per PSI.

there is no OBD port on a 93 miata.

Doh! I know that.. I'd just make it visually look like the BEGI-S kit then. Kind like what I am doing with my old 99 FMII kit. Sure it will have a piggy back MS but they don't need to know that. (I'm leaving the extra injectors and Piggy installed, but only thing it is doing is going to control boost)

They don't plug into the ODB port on in Ontario, Canada.

Sleeper
I would put it back to the closest thing you can get to the s kit or older fm1 kit( afpr No piggy back etc ) & get the eo sticker from Corky or Stephanie. The ref stations are smarter than your local corner smog guy. Keep in mind that for some reason the 90-93 1.6 cars seam to fail for high Nox. Dial back the timing to say 8* it seams to help. I am not an expert on the MS but have heard that guys are pasing with it at regular smog shops. Good Luck.

If it's well-tuned, EGO is cycling properly, and your injectors aren't too big, it's possible to pass a 1.6 on Megasquirt at a normal smog shop. Not sure what the numbers are like for the '94-'95.

Problem is that he's gotta go to a referee station. These guys aren't your local Cletus & Earl's, they're serious. These are the dudes who are sanctioned by the state to OK things like kit cars and hybrid conversions- they know their ****. The ref may wish to visually inspect the ECU, so the MS has to go. That means the stock blue-top injectors need to go back in, along with the AFM and NBO2. Dial the base TEN timing back to 6°BTDC.

I'd strongly advise against de-turboing the car. You show up at a ref station with a turbo ticket and an NA car, and they'll know something fishy is going on. If the ref is upset about going through a messy divorce, he can let you go, then recall you in a month or two.

mkulak and Stealth97 are right. Your best bet is to get the car into a 100% compliant situation as a BEGI-1. That means you'll need to get an RRFPR and a Pierburg pump installed on the car ASAP. I wouldn't worry about tuning the RRFPR, just stay out of boost on the way to the shop.

Here's the full text of EO D-349 so you know what you're up against: http://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/eo/D-349.pdf

Out of curiosity, what were the 8 things he fined you for?

So where do CA DIY guys stand, if sent to the ref? We don't have an CARB approved kit to fall back on. Can they crush the car?

If that E.O., executed in 1994, is BEGi's basis for CARB certification, it may raise a couple of issues. For example, it specifies either an IHI or Aerodyne turbo, not the Garrett turbos most commonly used. Another, though not for Sleeper, is that it is applicable to 1.6 liter engines through 1993 only.

I'm hoping BEGi has either an amended or updated E.O. for the kits they presently sell as CARB certified. Can anyone out there shed any light on this?

Then i would seriusly look into the **** that got you pulled over and cut it out or lessen it. GL man

Kenzo idk about crush but they could revoke the plates etc, and fine you out the ***. There has been talk of crushing cars but mostly in canada. From what i believe this is all just hear say though.

Yeah, as usual, sane advice from Joe... You need to look just like the kit. Find out if there are any easier refs in your area. My father took his chevy to the ref ~four times... Then he went to a different ref and they were just happy to see such a cool car.

But basically, the car needs to be 100% stock plus the mods listed in the EO. Anything else, even a different color/material hose, can get you failed. I don't know the consequences, though.
