It is true; we east cost people don’t have the roads like north eastern Ca. I spent 5 months tearing up highway 49 a few years ago, some of the best driving I have ever experienced, Hell I was replacing brake pads every other week. I have found the foot hills of North Carolina to be a good compromise. I can drive 45 minutes and be on roads that are almost as fun to drive, as any I found in Ca. I can drive 5-6 hours and be at my house on the coast, and I live in a state that I can do just about any thing I want to my vehicle, and still be street legal.




For those that think the bugs and critters are bad in FL, here are a few pictures of what crawled into my shop this week.

seriously, this is so beyond fucked up. i don't understand why you shouldn't be abel to run whatever the **** you want on your car for parts, as long as it passes whatever sniffer tests that they set for the model and year...

i want to see emissions restrictions get tighter, but making any of these restrictions PARTS DEPENDANT is ******* beyond stupid. ignorant ******* lawmakers...

The old argument was the cars behave differently under load, so an idle test wouldn't be representative. But now with cali using dyno-loaded tests anyway, there's really no reason not to repeal everything except tailpipe tests.

yes, this is true. but at the end of the day, you have someone telling you what you can or can't do to your car with no basis in reality of what the intent of said laws are. if the idea is to make sure cars are running clean, and make sure you're not modding them to do otherwise, then settle disputes with a sniffer to check the ACTUAL issue being dealt with.

under th current system in cali, i could homebrew some sick underhood inventions and run MS to get super low emissions and great mileage, and still be failed/fined/fucked. end of the day, it's a case of lawmakers not taking the time to think things through and understand what they're trying to regulate.

i have mixed feelings about someone telling me what i can or can't do with my personal property. on one hand, its my money, my time, my car, so **** off... on the other hand, if i'm getting 6mpg and dumping lots of excess **** into the air that's provably bad for everyone, i'm not just wasting my time/money/etc... i'm ******* up everyone's program to a degree. it's a balancing act, but regulating based on your ACTUAL end goal is a good start and a good way to **** people like me off less...

It's a cost/benefit sort of thing. The odds of getting reffed are low. The consequences, though, are quite high. It's why i avoid posionus snakes and eating random things I find on the street. Probably nothing will happen, but if it does, it sucks. Huge fines, lose you car, at minimum a gigantic hassle.


Hot rod magazine did an article maybe 10 years ago on a 10 second 70's camaro, naturally asipirated, that had better emissions than the then-current honda civic. Then they took a page or two to show every emissions law it "would have broke had it been on the street".

I know my car is hacked up! dude i was kissing *** when i got pulled over. He is just one smart cop! he knew what he was looking for.....i would take pictures but my enigine bay is all taken apart at this time already. trying to put it back to stock.

Let us know how your meeting with the Ref's go. I for one am interested; first because I live in California and am strongly considering installing a BEGi Series 2 or 3 kit, and second, becasue I live in Fairfield (aka, the scene of the crime) and like you I might someday run into that same officer.

Have you used any of the info in this thread to help you prepare your case?

If your list of violations includes illegal components, and the ref fails to find them, now that you're going back to stock, how will you explain this? In my experience, smog ***** (refs) are hard-*******-core and can make 25yo cops seem like mushy pushovers by comparison. Expect zero negotiation with the ref.

Also, please update us on the results of your appointment.

Er, a few people already said that it's worked for them to go back to stock, so why not?

Being "nice" doesn't always cut it. One, sometimes they are just in a bad mood, but sometimes, they think you're kissing up. Anytime I'm overly cooperative, they throw the book at me.

My roomate, I've been passanger in his car a few times when he got pulled over, and he never gets tickets.

I'll also note that some folks told the OP to turn back your timing to 6*. They will of course check your timing and it has to be within spec or they will fail you. This is part of a regular smog check so I'm sure the ref will do it. I think the spec is +/- 2* so you can still go back to 8.

My wife's Altima failed because of timing even though it passed out the tailpipe. I was driving a SE-R at the time with a JDM engine so my car would fail the visual before they even thought of testing the tailpipe. The CARB laws are about money. They don't really care what comes out your tailpipe.

I miss some stuff about living in San Diego, but now I live in Florida with no smog inspections and I'm loving it! The lack of a state income tax is just icing on the cake! I learned a long time ago not to knock Cali or try to convince anyone from there of the benifits of another state. I equate Californians with Southerners (that should burn them up) in that both groups have enormous pride for where they come from, think it is the best place on the earth, and many don't even want to visit another place. Basically they will defend it to the death. When I lived there I would constantly tell my friends, you should check out how much house you can get if you moved to XXX. I always got the same response (no matter where I was talking about), "Yeah, but then I'd have to live in XXX!"

Actually, most Californian's are transplants from the colder regions of the country, and so we know exactly what it's like to live elsewhere. For example, I'm a Connecticut Yankee who moved here via Martinsburg Virginia, Bayfield Colorado, and Tucson Arizona.

Native Californias are actually quite rare, and they're not afraid to tell you so.

Being in the Navy, I have lived many, many places. But I was born and raised in San Diego and can't wait to get back. Being Military and a legal resident of Florida, I don't have to worry about smog, but I know how bad is sucks.

The only other thing that really pisses me off about Cali is the gun laws. Hippies hate guns and Cali has more than any other state. It's virtually impossible to get a CCW in this state unless you can prove you carry large amounts of cash on you for some reason. I don't need to strap a shorty MP5 around with me, but with craziness on the rise daily in our fair country... iron (especially in Cali) should be a given if you desire. The Commonwealth of Virginia in general is absurd in it's legislation (worse than Cali and I speak from experience), but it is a "shall issue" state and I say Amen.

When I said "them" I meant both groups. Like I said, it's one way they are similar. I was born and raised in the deep South and I lived in Cali for 6 years so I know folks from both groups pretty well. Getting a Southerner to visit Cali is about as easy as getting a Californian to visit the South. The Southerner is scared they will get hit on by a gay person or attacked by a crazy person, the Californian is scared they will get shot or attacked by a crazy person. Both are just ridiculous overreactions.

And yes there are lots of transplants in Cali, but it's those who are born in Cali that have the most Cali-pride.

Heh, well, I dunno. It's just a very nice place. I've visited places that had some pluses, but it's hard to imagine giving up on all I get here. I think I could learn to live with things in other places, but....

'Course, enough cash that I could get a house AND have the miata would be awesome. :-)

I will let you guys know how it goes. my appointment will be in july. i just got the afm. still need injecotrs..will goto pick n pull this weeken..do you guys know what other car shares the same injectors as the 1.6 miata? well, i got pulled over that day doing 68 mph in the rain...everyone was doing about 55/60 ...it was on highway 80 in fairfield ... he said my suspension was too tight and that i will spin out n crash if i hit a little oil. i have falken azenis on by the way. i don't know if it helps being on the road better.

anways how's the fire in santa cruz? can you see the smoke where you are at?
