relief welds on manifold

as title says....

what is the best equipment to use to make these cuts?

https://www.miataturbo.net/bgracer/P...ifold_cuts.jpg

just picked up my greddy kit and the cuts have not been done.

after its done.. i guess itll be in 3 pieces?

curly 04-29-2010 01:14 AM

Search. Hacksaw. Might not need to do them.

cardriverx 04-29-2010 01:22 AM

an air cut off tool would do it easy.

cjernigan 04-29-2010 01:23 AM

Chop saw, hack saw, abrasive hand held cut-off wheel. About anything will work as long as you can deburr the cut when you're done.

miatale93 04-29-2010 01:25 AM

oh ok.. and does it come out to 3 pieces like the pic above?

cjernigan 04-29-2010 01:28 AM

It won't be three separate pieces but the runners will no longer be attached at the flange. You're simply allowing the manifold to expand and contract more freely by making the cuts.

miatale93 04-29-2010 01:44 AM

around...

1/8" for the width of the cut?

magnamx-5 04-29-2010 02:25 AM

yeah

curly 04-29-2010 02:25 AM

Width shouldn't matter, as long as you cut through it. But like I said, you might not have to cut the manifold if you have a new generation greddy manifold.

Mine was cut by the PO, and is currently warped to the point where I have no idea how I'm going to get it off. That's what she said.

make sure to wear gloves and safety goggles

lordrigamus 04-29-2010 02:42 AM

Fuel/ air bomb, make sure everybody around you is wearing gloves and safety goggles.

turotufas 04-29-2010 02:48 AM

Walk into a harbor freight and hit the air tools wall. 1/4 of anything on the wall can do the job for cheap.

miatale93 04-29-2010 03:05 AM

ic.. curly how can i tell if its new gen manifold or not?.. ill try get a pic up and my setup...

can't use air tools.. i do not have a air tank~...

either going to buy a hack saw.. or buy more blades for the dremel!

curly 04-29-2010 03:14 AM

If it's a hack saw, use lots of used motor oil to lube the blade.

Or buy a $15 angle grinder from HF and use one or two $1.99 cut off wheels for a much faster and lazier approach.

No I cannot tell if it's a new manifold. I just know that there were chronic issues with the original that required relief cuts, and that eventually people stopped doing the relief cuts and they were fine, indicating a design change.

If it's used (as it appears to be) and it's survived this long without cracks, I'd just leave it alone. However I assume no responsibility.

miatale93 04-29-2010 04:17 AM

icic.. well i rather be more conservative.. and just do the cuts.. my first setup.. so i want to boost a bit before.. getting broken parts = buying more parts

curly 04-29-2010 04:33 AM

I have no idea what you just said. Good luck.

GrantWilson 04-29-2010 06:10 AM

I think that he meant, Better safe than sorry? not sure

Portable Bandsaw FTW.

miatale93 05-02-2010 03:04 AM

thanks to my friend Justin helped me out to cut it with air tool.. the middle one was kinda hard to get to.. and wasn't straight.... o well as long ass there is room for expansion...

post a pic tomorrow.

here is my link to my kit....

so somebody told me i do not have a greddy manifold.. anybody can somehow identify what i have???

thanks...

curly 05-27-2010 04:20 AM

Oh yeah, definitely not. No idea what it is though. You should probably get rid of that adapter though. Talk about leaks.

NA6C-Guy 05-27-2010 04:28 AM

Mint flavored dental floss and fine sand? MacGyver would do it.

Fuck, I'm late.

miatale93 05-27-2010 04:29 AM

not sure what that adpater does.. wonder if its for clearance issue.

Doppelgänger 05-27-2010 07:51 AM

What confuses me is I don't know if you are cutting or welding the manifold.....

m2cupcar 05-27-2010 08:28 AM

:werd: Still waiting on the relief welds. In for the title change.

cutting the welds.. only the middle section looks hacked up because the blade got very worn and wanted to finish the job..and the blade circumference was not really big. 3inches? i mean as long as there is room for it to expand.... look at the end of the album..

But those are relief cuts, not welds, which would imply adding material.

curly 05-27-2010 01:57 PM

No he said he's cutting the welds, perhaps he thinks the flange was welded together?

miatale93 05-27-2010 03:39 PM

more like relief cuts ;)

SolarYellow510 05-28-2010 09:27 PM

I'm going to guess it was a Greddy kit with a manifold that cracked, and was replaced with the $100 Ebay cast manifold that has a T3 flange and a T3-toT2 adapter, also from Ebay.

You could always figure out which Volvo T25s have a T3 flange and maybe bolt a junkyard one of those up directly. I've been wondering what kind of results that would produce on one of these cast manifolds. Pick-Your-Parts around here are full of turbo Volvos.

Reverend Greg 05-28-2010 11:08 PM

Does that Compressor wheel look really fucked to anyone else?
(G)

SolarYellow510 05-29-2010 03:15 AM

That's what happens when you don't run a filter.

Reverend Greg 05-29-2010 09:42 PM

^^^^^^^^^^^
Yeah thats what I thought too,why would someone start a project from such a disadvantage?

relief cuts on manifold

I've seen some are worse than my condition.. it will still work but won't be perfect.

at least there is no shaft play.
