Reloacated AFM - pics
Last night I got my silcone hose reducer from turbo housing to afm (reducer).
I relocated the afm to in front of the radiator. It also does not catch on the bonnet either. The difference is now like night and day now. I also think my 4 wire 02 sensor wiring had a loose connection. I will post up pics later tonite. I have lost even more bling now (spike) Just wanted to see pics of how and where others have relocated their AFM |
OMG yes!! I want more info because I want to relocate the filter behind the headlight lid with AFM.

Tabs since you took bling out,you also need to put bling back in.
Polish your thermostat housing. Looks good:bigtu: |

yup thats what I did. I had to trim the silicon coupler to make it short enough, then trim the edges of the fan on either side of the mounting bolt to make it fit. it was a snug fit.
are you using the stock greddy dp? if not, could you get a picture of any trimming you had to do with the heat sheild? I have to trim mine sometime soon, and it'd be nice to get some ideas in my head before I do it. |
I just recently did the same thing, except I angled it outboard a bit.
|
VRTSid: the pass?
expensivehobby22: pictures? tabs604: what size filter is that? |
I'll take some pictures tonight.

tabs604: what size filter is that? Its a K and N Induction kit for a 1.6 NA. fits nie and snug and looks better than the ugly yellow greddy filter and for a change this is not hot to the touch anymore now as it as at front and above the fan too. |
So what size coupler did you use?

Relocated my AFM into this location last November. This has proven to be a very efficient setup- the pressure drop across the unit is zero even with the engine at full load. :bigtu:
|
You MS/EMU/Link/Tec guys think you're funny? Well you're not, OK! You're about as funny as a screendoor on a battleship!
That setup is pretty sweet. I don't see any room to for a recirc fitting though... guess it's VTA if you're going that route. Does it sound any different? |
You should tap a vac line fitting onto the AFM for the breather. OlderGuy and brgracer have pics in their VBgarages showing where they did it.
Sam, my 2 ventures into AFM removal, though brief, were night and day. *Much* better drivablity and a 1.5-2 psi boost increase without that damn thing. |

Never gets warm, the restriction is now zero - even at full load and the engine seems to like it too! Must be the cardboard box it's sat in that helps I think though! Here's what mine looks like now (sans AFM)... I've never had any problems not running the crank case breather either - been running it VTA for years now and never seen any problems at all! |
damn you guys without afms ! i wanna run a coldair box like that but WITH the afm... i've been looking at the begi 1.6L setup with that weird ass "s" piping that makes room for the afm to fit behind the driver side light... seems tricky.
|
Couldn't find my camera last night so it'll be tonight before I can post pics. Doesn't look much different than tabs setup though. It's just angled an inch or two outboard from where the end of his air filter is.

I did exactly the same - makes it a whole lot nicer IMO.

All is not as good as first thought with the new relocation.
Ever since owning the car the temp guage has never gone over the half way mark. Today it did sitting in traffic. Not all the way over to the red but a fair bit over. Coolant was not boiling though. I think it is down to the air filter being directly above the fan which is extracting hot air from the radiator straight in to the air filter? Any other explanations? |
I've got essensially the same setup as you tabs, although at 7psi. going from N/A to turbo (with afm right off turbo) I saw a small spike in normal coolant temps. sans turbo, the needle was a needle's thickness away from the bulb in the termometer icon. now its just barely touching (it moved about a needles thickness hotter)
aka, no problems overheating. |
maybe it's your redbull can you left inside the bay....
|
Here is my setup. The filter is the one brainiac always suggests k&n ru5111 I think.

hi
How did you angle it outwards? |
|
Creep around on my SC mirror site for some AFM relocations. On John Evan's page you can see a few things that he did (including moving the AFM to the cold side of the engine):

You could add in a bling support for the AFM to keep it from drooping down.
|
I was thinking that. But there is very very little movement as it is!
Gonna add a strut brace providing it clears the heat shield. |

Will do spike!
Will post some more up as soon as I finish the next little project in there! |

Here is a newer pic.
Changed the airbox/heatshield May change again to carbon in the next few weeks though-will post up a new one! Attachment 216292 |
I know someone named Lanks that wants to send me his old box.
|
:) Which one the first (old) or the second (new)?
I made both myself, not difficult, I can run you through it! I made them myself as I have an intricut FMIC pipe system, you can see the pipe from the turbo going down into the arch-gives more room in the engine bay! And I'm in the UK! |
