Replace standard bolt with studs or bolts?
 

Hey Guys,

I have been to a few places in my area. Cant seem to find a place that sells the grade 8 studs that everyone talks about, to use on the manifold.

I have found a place that sells M8 1.25 X 35mm which I figure would be okay?

I really only want to do this once and forget about it.

Do you think that a bolt and regular split washer would be okay?

Downpipe to turbo hardware? Get studs with nuts if possible. It's a PITA to get bolts out of the downpipe without taking the turbo off the mani. I made that mistake and paid for it last week.

Call up FM and tell them you need studs,nord-lock washers and stover nuts.

I use studs on my manifold and they keep coming loose. I even have the nordlock washers. I'm going to swap them out for bolts and use the nordlocks on those. I seem to be the only one with auto-loosening studs though.

You might want to give stover nuts a try before you swap to bolts.

Yeah, I put one nut on and then tightened the other against it to put the studs into the head. Used Loctite and then backed off the two nuts and then put on the nordlock washers and tightened them down pretty snug. Then I put a second nut on top of that. STILL came loose.

I'm going to try bolts with the nordlocks. If that comes loose I am seriously going to put in bolts and tack weld them to the turbo housing. I just don't get it. I don't mean to turn anyone away from studs, this seems to be an isolated problem. It's just....damn.

I would suggest you get stainless studs with stainless locking acorn nuts. Never had an issue. Whatever you get, make sure the nut part has a flange on it.

Rob at Flipside has a thread locker thats good to over 2000f. I think he paid $50 for the bottle of it. I'll try and get more info and post a link.
