Scary sound after Greddy install

A friend and I installed a Greddy kit, with no other modifications than some tan 1.8 injectors. Everything seemed to go okay, but when I took it out for a very gentle test drive, I heard a weird noise. It sounds a lot like a resonant rattle, like the loose heat shield that I clipped, except it's higher pitch and isn't so frequency-specific... I only hear it when boost starts to fall, kind of like if I had a bypass or blowoff installed. It doesn't sound like air, but it happens at times when I'd expect to hear a BOV if I had one.

I've been super gentle with it so far and parked it after I heard the noise. Could it be the oil feed wasn't done quite right, or would the turbo be making a terrible racket if it wasn't getting enough oil? The oil return is wet, so it's at least getting some.

does it kind of sound like a fluttering sound like possibly compressor surge mine made that until i replaced the plastic intake pipe with the intercooler pipes?? just my .02 cents

Tighten your wastegate actuator rod until it doesn't rattle.

ITs your wastegate actuator rod 100% sure. If Its a buzzing sound on deceleration that has to be it. That drove me crazy after I Installed the Greddy on my car until I figured out how to get rid of it.

No, it's not compressor surge -- I know what that sounds like. The crappy BOV that FM sold in their MSM kit was too tight and gave me all kinds of surge.

I was hoping that would be it! I saw it mentioned in some searches, but I figured it would only make noise if the wastegate actually had to open... as in reaching a few pounds of boost. I'll check this out when I get home this weekend. Thanks.

Mine only rattled on decel until I snugged it down. I'd bet that's the issue.

I must have grabbed the wrong two metal pieces, because I just bent the connector between the rod and the turbo out, away from the turbo. I was watching the can side to make sure the rod itself didn't turn. Wtf.

It's the least of my worries, though. I have a new oil leak that I thought was the CAS o-ring or valve cover gasket. I replaced both, and it seems like oil is spraying up, from the back side of the engine. Not a huge amount, and not until the motor gets hot.

Oil Pressure Sending Unit port?

You bet your ass I am! +5 hp right there!

I should have read your post before going back out for another test drive. I paced until I noticed that I never replumbed that god damn hose. My Home Depot intake doesn't have the nipple like the greddy piece. Hope I didn't break anything.

That is some JDM shit right there.

SamS 02-13-2008 10:20 AM

haha a coldside turbo

urgaynknowit 02-13-2008 11:40 AM

what problems might he have caused by boosting the valve cover?

So some people tap their oil pans while on the car, and they blow a little compressed air into the oil hole to help the shavings make their way out. I know someone said not to use any more than 10 psi or you'd 'blow the oil seals out' or something, but I don't have a clear picture of how the different oil thoroughfares are connected. I'm going to shit a ton of bricks if I get home tonight and find that now I have to pull the motor out.

nothing really more than just a mess in the engine bay when things like the oil dipstick pop out and leak oil everywhere.
