Shift points on stock GReddy kit?
With a stock car other than a stock GReddy kit bolted on, is it worth it to wind it all the way up to 7+ grand for maximum acceleration?

Look at the dyno plots from memebers. THen you tell us... dont you hate when peope pull that shit.. I know i do.
|
Heh, I tried searching before asking the question and found nothing but I honestly didn't think of looking at dyno sheets. :P
Half of the pictures don't work but according to myfonti's dyno chart I think the torque and hp curves just flatten out on the top end so it'd be worth it to twist it till it twists no more! |
bingo!

If I'm going for max acceleration I shift at just about 500rpm shy of redline, that seems to plop me right back into perfect boost.

Yup, everybody says that the valvetrain and everything is good to 7200 (I think). I shift at 6k in an effort to save the motor for as long as possible. I've got 190's for compression all the way around, so I know it's still good. For MY street needs, 6k is all that's required.
|
I've been told the valvetrain is good to 8 grand (or am I recalling my dsm...) either way, the rev limiter is very conservative at 7200. I found myself plowing into the rev limiter today in first gear for the first time ever and don't have to think much of it. :D
|
The most I TRY to rev to is 6500.
When NA i only ever hit the limiter once, maxed out on the motorway (freeway) and that was some crazy Japanese speed limiter, not the rpm limiter. Since the Greddy install though it's taken a little geting used to how quickly the revs build. I wouldn't recommend bouncing it off the limiter too much though, why not get a megasquirt or something? then you can set your own rpm limit :eek5: |
I rev to 6500 and boy does it feel good.:bigtu:

On the 1.8:
Valve float at 7700rpm Rods weaken at 8000+ oil pump cavitation at 8500+ 1.6 is probably close to that. Just multiply torque by the gear ratio and figure out how hard you have to rev it before the number is equal in the next gear. On a stock 1.8, it's like 7200rpm 1-2, then 7000 2-3, then 6800 3-4 and 4-5. |
I keep hitting the damn limiter on some corners at the track due to no LSD. :(

i highly doubt there is any cavitation in the oil pump at 8500 rpm. You might risk it exploding because of material composition, but thats about all.

he's not joking, the oil pump gears can fail. |
I realize that, its just the way he said it that makes it a little entertaining.
