Slow spool and using alot of oil
 

So I wanted to ask some questions.

My car is going thru a lot of oil. I thought it was the lack of an oil restrictor or the leaking oil drain on the turbo but I fixed both issue and it did not help. So i upgraded the pcv valve to one good to 20psi and replaced the hose coming out of the turbo side of the valve cover with a filter and capped the conection on the inlet pipe. I have great compression 180,185,190,185
I am still going thru oil.
I dont have oil in coolant or coolant in the oil.
I have noticed oil/black marks around the exhuast tip.

I have a garrett 2554 with min shaft play.

Any ideas?


Also I have noticed lately that my I am not fully spooled 15psi till 4k and it used to be up to 11psi by 3k maybe a bit before. Could this be caused by a cracked down pipe. I noticed while sea foaming the car thru a vac line that smoke came up by the downpipe. I have checked the conection and it is secure. THe down pipe is wraped. So I cant see any it to see cracks.

If it is cracked can I weld the cracks up?

A cracked downpipe won't effect your spool. If your going through oil you should do a leakdown test.

Ok I will search and figure out how to do that and what equipment is needed.

Could it be the turbo leaking oil or do you figure it is the 130k on the engine.

A clogged cat would sure mess up your spool. If you're blowing oil out of your turbo seals, that could certainly clog your cat. An exhaust shop will be able to tell if your cat is flowing.

Do a leakdown test to exculpate the engine. If you have huge blowby, your breather filter should be oily. 130K isn't a big deal on these engines as long as they're maintained. If engine is OK, next step is the turbo.

This is not completely true. A leak directly after the turbine housing WILL affect spool. I had a massive leak from turbo to downpipe elbow and it greatly affected my spool.

Most likely tho... a small crack wouldnt affect it.

Check and make sure your charge pipes don't have oil in them. I worked on a turbo integra that was going through a bunch of oil. One of the seals went in the turbo and it was going into the intake piping. Disconnected everything to clean the pipes and noticed the intercooler was pretty much full of oil.

charge pipes and tb where pretty much oil free and the valve cover vent has not shown any signs of oil either since I change to a filter.

How long ago did you change to the restrictor? It took my VW a few days of the oil restrictor to repair itself back years ago.

Which specific PCV valve are you running?

I got it from a local performance shop. He said it was good to 30psi to his knowledge and he had sold a lot of them. It said Miata on the package.

I only installed the restrictor last weekend. I will watch and see if my oil consumption goes down. I did notice quite a puff off white/grey smoke when I floored it this afternoon. If it is the engine that ok I am going to change soon but If it is the turbo I have a bigger problem.

Sounds fishy to me.

I don't think I would ever use a PCV valve that said "miata" on the package. How many other models of cars did it list on the package?

Leaky oil return line?

Yeah the oil return line from the turbo always leaked at the turbo. I removed it and it turned out there was not a gasket in there. So I ordered one and installed it and that fixed it.

The miata was the only thing listed on the package.

So your saying that its fixed now? I thought you said you had already repaired the oil drain? Anyway, check the front and rear mains as well as the cps. The cps is easy to over look as it will trickle down the bell housing and somtimes pretty far down the tranny and get written off as a tranny or shifter turret leak.

Get a specific MSM valve, not the one that is considered "compatible".

I have not fixed my oil issue. I had hope fixing the oil drain issue would fix it but it did not. I only fixed it last weekend tho I will keep an eye on it the next few days and see how it does.
