SPS Motorsport Turbo Kit - 1.6 NB
2 Attachment(s)
Hey there,
I've been reading and following this forum for a few years now, but not been an active contributor. I'm from Luxembourg / Europe and I've owned my '99 MX5 NB 1.6 since 2010. It's covered some 150k miles and has been through quite some modifications, including a FM Voodoo 2 Kit, over these years. I'm only now jumping again on the turbo-train and was looking into another FM Kit, since I was quite satisfied with it back then. It performed faultlessly for many trackdays and even in some competitions (hill climb, time attack). But then I found out about a company "SPS Motorsport" in Germany that was offering their own kits for a few months now. They also sell FM stuff over here (among others) but their own kit offered more for about the same amount of money than the FM Voodoo kit (you have to consider that shipping and import taxes for EU customers add quite a bit to the retail price of parts from the US). So this is what you get when ordering their kit: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1467292694 - Garrett GT2560R Turbo - SPS Turbo manifold - SPS downpipe - DW 700cc injectors - Boost Products intercooler - MSPNP2 wiht basemap for this setup - BOV (think it's an Audi/VW unit) - Air filter - all the pipings / fittings / aso. I'll keep posting as I progress with installation, mapping and so on. I'll throw it on the 150k 1.6 engine as it is to see how it performs, before rebuilding the engine and going for more power / boost. Did a quick compression test and the engine seems healthy enough with 180psi compression on all 4 cylinders. |
Welcome! Nice first post, the turbo kit looks solid, looking forward to seeing your progress.
Joined 5yrs ago, finally made your first post, that in itself is impressive lol |
Can we get some better pictures of the manifold and downpipe?
|
and by better he means not on photobucket ( the worlds shittiest image hosting site).

just upload here.
1. Photobucket is slow as shit. 2. it resizes images down to like 800px. 3. i still somehow click the "enlarge image" button--every fucking time--and the page just reloads (after 10 minutes) and diplays the same 800px sized image. |
Cheers, didn't know the forum had this feature. Edited the first post with the picture re-uploaded here. Still, it's not very good, picture from my phone. Will upload more detailed pics asap.

The Manifold and DP is from Sturovo/Matus/Revent. They work together with him.

That looks good.
|
its not bad at all. likely would flow better than the fm setup too
|
Really nice!
Look forward to seeing the finished product! |
Cheers guys! I'm getting some more parts before getting started on this, and since it's kind of mid season and I have more track days booked, I kinda don't want to get started if I'm not 100% sure the car will be ready for the next track outing.
I'm still to decide which wideband o2 sensor I'm gonna run. I'm also not sure which digital dash / data logger I'm gonna use. Ahh, decisions.... Off topic: I also just noticed that some threads have kinda been hijacked to "discuss" the 1.6 turbocharging mistake. To prevent this, I'm just gonna say, this car needs to remain the 1.6 engine since the FIA classes are divided by the engine displacement. Turbocharged cars have their original displacement multiplied by 1.7 . With the 1.6 engine, I'll keep it in the sub 3000ccm class (2715ccm), while the 1.8 would put me just about in the highest class above 3000ccm (3126ccm) with all the 2.0 turbocharged cars and big n/a cars aso. |

It looks like a Sturovo kit (Revent Shop these days). I have an early model with subaru turbo flange.
Water connections where prone to leak, everything else have taken 30k km's of abuse including track time (i have the "track version" with thiker walls). From other kit's, and if you're going 3" DP/exhaust you'll gona have severe creep. Same with 2,5" althouth less of corse. |

I didn't have that problem on my FM kit with the same Garrett GT2560R Turbo, so I don't think it should be a problem with this kit. |
Your wheels. I want them.

Indeed, the downpipe has the Revent logo on it. As for the boost creep, that should be a problem of the wastegate not being able to get rid of the excessive exhaust gases, rather than the downpipe i guess?!
I didn't have that problem on my FM kit with the same Garrett GT2560R Turbo, so I don't think it should be a problem with this kit. People buying new turbos from non turbo kit vendores that bring these essues adressed, tend to not start frankansteining 800€ parts even before starting the car. |
I finally got around to start on the turbo kit installation last weekend. While I was at it, I replaced the timing belt, pulley and tensioner first. Wanted to replace the water pump too, but there's a weird thing with the new pump. It's missing the bracket to attach the alternator, so I got to get back to IL Motorsport to sort this out.
Next, out with the engine and gearbox. Should make the whole process a lot easier. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d9b9c41588.jpg Got the coolant reroute kit in place. This must be a pita to do with the engine in the car. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...bea457cc76.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b50ef05aeb.jpg It's also a good time to replace the old engine mounts with stiffer ones and get the adapter plate for the oil cooler in place. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6c0831f725.jpg |
Next up was the oil feed line for the turbo and replacing injectors. When ordering the kit, I was told that it included 700cc DW injectors. Instead, i found out that I got 440cc Denso injectors. So I'm gonna check with SPS about that. Also, I have the feeling I could tighten the oil feed line (the t-connector) a bit more, but due to the line being rigid on the first 2 inches, it won't clear the inlet manifold... not really happy with that
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...42cfb5fa8c.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3ce9004f27.jpg I also got the oil return line fitted to the sump and painted the cam cover, but didn't take any pics. Anyway, I'm waiting on 2 gaskets to arrive, so I can continue the build next weekend and hopefully get it all back together and maybe even a first startup... let's see. |
