Thinking of coming back to Miata turbo's
 

Hello everyone. I am new to this site, but not to boosted Miata's. About 8 years ago I had a '91 with a Greddy kit, FMIC, Link Management, LSD, etc.. Any way I had a ton of stuff on it running around 12psi. Had to sell it because we needed something bigger at the time so I got into motorcycles.

Anyway I am working on selling the bike and might be at a point to come back to my beloved Miata World but it feels like I have been out of the loop for a while. I know this time I will probably start with a 94-97 M-edition and go from there. I know I want to put together a more reliable turbo kit than the Greddy (not knocking the kit because I had a lot of good times with it) and it looks like the FM kits are still out there along with the BEGI kits.

I have gone to both sites to start reading up but holy cow! The BEGI site has a ton of options to look through. And I don't even think the Mega Squirt was around when I had mine.

Basically I am wanting to know are those pretty much the standard options still if I am wanting 250 RWHP? Are there other prefabbed kits that I am not listing?

For 250 HP in a pre-packaged kit, yeah, FM and Bell are your two options.

Bell's site is a tad cluttered, with way too many options, but if you just call 'em on the phone they'll help you out.

On a more realistic note, ARTech makes great stuff that will surpass just about anyone's product aside from ABSURDflow.

Looks like if I were going to spend the time to put it all together from scratch these would be the places to go.

Is the Link ECU used anymore?

Megasquirt is pretty much mandatory now-a-days unless you're going to go with the more expensive AEM ecu...

No, it's obsolete by now, even FM doesn't use it anymore. MS can be bought by someone on this site for about $400-500, and that's PNP.

Spend your money on a good manifold and downpipe, buy a $200-$400 chinacharger off ebay, fab up a FMIC with an ebay intercooler/aluminum pipe kit, get that MS I mentioned, drop in some cleaned and flow tested injectors, and you'll be good to go! Supporting mods will have to follow obviously. AKA, wheels, tires, brakes, transmission, differential, etc.

So are more people these days going with a DIY kit? It does seem like there are more vendors out there that are making the parts. Guess you just have to know how you want the whole thing setup and start making a list of the components that will work together.

No, we're just cheap fuckers. FM and BEGI's kits are good, but 2-3 times as expensive as doing it yourself, IF you know what you're doing. BEGI's S kit is good deal, especially with the china charger.

Yeah, both FM and Bell will sell you a package consisting of only the "hard" parts (manifold, downpipe, intake pipes if you want 'em, etc) but without the engine management. This would be my personal preference, assuming I wasn't going to go with something like an Absurdflow manifold.

Speaking from experience, I'd go ABSURDflow V-band manifold and DP, TiAL everything, Bell intercooler custom job for pseudo v-mount, and MS3. I'd also get in line for a set of 949 Xida's before I bought anything that made power.

LOL....I am sitting here trying to make since of the things you are mentioning but it is going to take some research for sure.

The problem I always had with putting it together from scratch was with the way the turbo sat on different manifolds and getting a DP that fit it correctly. Can you clock the turbo housing to make it fit on different manifolds?

If you were going to go piece by piece how much cash would you save over going with the kit? Is it not really that you save much cash but you get an overall better setup?

I've a "directed pulse" 1.8 BEGI mani and separated gas d/p for sale, with <5000 miles on em.

Contact Abe over at ARtech. I just got quoted for a 3" DP for... $285 dollars! That's less than what Bell wants for their shitty, rarely-fitting 2" mild steel piece of shit (They make some nice stuff, just not the downpipe).

If I were to do it all over again, I would get all ARtech stuff, pay less than I would for a BEGI log and S-DP, and rock a 2560. I run a brain-built MS-I which I paid 435 shipped for, and it was perfect. Slap on some RX7 550cc injectors and rock 250hp all day :).

EDIT: Actually, check out my sig. It's about as basic of a kit as you can get, hardware-wise. In terms of electronics, it's pretty basic, but you can run bandaids (If you're a bit thick :)).

Artech's prices are unreasonably good especially considering the level of work and detail he puts into it. I cant wait to install the turboback he built for me.

"Clocking" allows you to change the relationship between the turbine housing, the center section, and the compressor housing.

It does not in an way allow you to change the relationship between the turbine inlet and the turbine outlet. That's purely a function of how the turbine housing is cast. So no, you can't in any way adjust the fitment of the manifold-turbo-downpipe assembly. With a V-band turbo you can rotate things a tad, but it sounds to me like you're talking about conventional bolt-flange turbos.

ARTech ftw for exhaust stuff, unless you can pick up some proven Begi/FM used parts for cheap. I shopped around and ARTech was pure win as far as new stuff goes...plus he will custom make everything how you want, if you want a specific muffler...whatever. Just PM him he's a nice guy.
