turbo tony install Q
so i got it all installed the other day, but i haven't got the clamp thingy install yet. it just goes over the slip fitting part right ? does it have to be tightened down like crazy ? or just kind of snug for rattling and slipping off ?

Are you talking about the vband that connects the 2 pieces? If so then you tighten down to where the band can't slip off of the joint. Go as tight as you need to, just don't overkill it.

I wish I could remember whether my Tony pipe came with a band clamp or a U-clamp. I've got several of both on the car and I really can't recall which part came from which source...
What you really want is something like this: http://tinyurl.com/3dsm9t It slips over the junction of the two pipes and has two bolts, one at each end, for a secure fit over both pieces. It does allow just a bit of flexation, which is a good thing as it will tend to relieve stress on the turbo and manifold. |
that looks like a good idea....summit racing is a 5 minute drive from where i live to. so i can go pick it up. = )
|
I also ended up tack welding them together because the u bolt clamp would allow the pipe to rotate a bit even when tightened.
|
i used nothing on my slip joint. :p
|
Mine didn't come with anything to clamp, so I got a U-Clamp.

i put my u-clamp on and the downpipe has been rattling like mad... i think im just going to pull mine off later when it cools down.

i just put my tony dp on 2 days ago with 2.5 piping to my OBX fleabay muffler. HOLY SPOOLAGE batman and NO RATTLES or anything. I even used that weird band shit to connect the dp.

I should clarify my earlier post as to the fact that I have "several of both" on the car. I'm using band clamps at the two locations where pipes are joined- namely the two halves of the downpipe and the midpipe-to-muffler union (above the rear axle) of my Enthuza. The U-clamps are used only as supports to connect a bracket to the pipe- not to couple two pipes. I have one supporting the downpipe to the bellhousing in approximately the same location as the stock bracket, and a second supporting the rear exhaust pipe where it enters the muffler- this was necessary since during my ill-fated attempt to relocate the spare tire a couple of years ago I cut off one of the stock hangers. Pictures of the downpipe bracket in post #7 here: https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/sh...highlight=tony |
