What clutch do you big power guys run?
I realize this isn't technically a Greddy question, but I figure this is the best source since there aren't too many people making big power on the 1.6.
Anyway, what clutch do ya'll use to hold up in the 250hp range on the 1.6? I am working on a t3 based setup and my goal is 250. I want an ACT. Does the heavy duty hold up (rated 200 TQ) or is the extreme the way to go. Thanks for the help. |
ACT XT. I'm pretty sure I reached the limits of the HD at 180rwtq.

btw, next time post in General Miata. Sounds like the XT is a winner. That's what I figured, but we put HD's in everything at work. Those are all 1.8's and I was afraid that the smaller 1.6 might run out of grip on me. Thanks for the input. |
The 1.8 HD has been used to hold up just fine in the 300 rwhp range.
So far, I'm pleased with mine, and hopefully will be giving it every last bit of my turbo shortly (around 275 hp). |

I have a Spec Stg 3 awaiting install. Same clutch the 300+whp SM-T cars use and they handle the power.

I got a stock 1.8 wheel for next to nothing and had it lightened.
I think I wrote this same thing yesterday: wouldn't you have a slightly heavier rotating mass that will absolutely not slip and transfer power, or a slightly lighter rotating mass that may rev faster, but potentially loose bite and slip? |

the 1.6 XT is rated for 277, the 1.8HD is 233...
my XT has been great, at an estimated 220-230whp. street disc. |
xt00, 7# flywheel. it's heavy, but you get used to it.

I just bought ACT 6puck sprung disk with ACT HD pressure plate, should be good for 300ft/lb

rusman i just got that installed on my car about a week ago.. BOY do i love it. But its like learning how to drive stick all over again hahaha. No more taking off easy or feathering. Gotta find the sweet spot, rev it and nearly drop the clutch.

Thanks again everyone. I'm just going to go with the 1.6 ACT XT with the street disk. It will take a little getting used to, but I like a stronger pedal pressure anyway. My wife doesnt drive the car too often, so it shouldnt be a big deal to have a manly pressure plate in the car.

From the way a pressure plate works, it seems those centrifugal weights should improve the clamping force as the rpms rise, by forcing the weights to the outer edges this causes the PP to acutally clamp harder down. My ACT HD was rated at 200tq, which is like a 33% increase ( i guesstimate the oem clutch can hold 150), new one is rated at 90% increase, so should hold closer to 280tq....but we'll see how effective this this is. one thing i wish was available, the clamping forces of all pressure plates. OEM, ACT, Centerforce, Clutchnet, Competition, SPEC, etc. Then one could just choose a damn disc he's happy with and call it a day. |

Alrighty then. I get everything ordered. ACT REALLY needs to update their website. Some of their part numbers have changed and they no longer make some of the stuff they used to. Makes things mighty confusing when you try to order from somewhere with old part numbers off the ACT website. I ended up going with the 1.6 extreme PP with the modified organic street disk. Aparently the only option of organic disk now from ACT without upgrading to 1.8 stuff. Thanks for the help. Now, I just have to get that bad boy in and broken in and then it's turbo time. It will be nice working on my car for a change.

Why not upgrade to 1.8? I have a 1.8l flywheel for sale if you want.
