What to heat wrap?
Just had my base greddy kit installed. Guy recommended I use heat wrap throughout the engine to protect wires/pipes/etc.
Can anyone ID what I should wrap? I don't have a lot of experience in the engine bay....so any pictures would be great. Lastly, should I get a heat shield as well? Where can I pick one up? (not a fabricator, as others have done). Thanks in advance.... Maverick |
FM sells a nice heatsheild...
wrap the coolant lines. then you should be fine. |
Definately wrap the two coolant lines behind the downpipe. If you don't end up getting a heatshield I would wrap the brake fluid reseviour as well. I have read that people with the Greddy have melted it. Probably not likely unless you are way above your efficiency of the turbo though.

UMMM just make sure the wrap isnt touching the downpipe.....I kinda caught my heat wrap onfire yesterday...:sadwavey:

Thanks all.
Had a wednesday miataphiles meet last night....buddy with a turbo showed me what he wrapped. Is it ok to protect the brake fluid resevoir with wrap? He had it protected by a piece of tin. I'd rather use the wrap.... Will post progress soon....hope to do this on Friday. |
I'm pretty sure it got added to the FAQ here... or the DYI one. <G>
Heater core hoses are a must, as is the brake master.... You should probably to the clutch master too. I've seen a melted master from the turbo heat too. You might want to consider putting something on the bottom of the hood too, since the greddy manifold makes it sit pretty high. If not, do a heat sheild of somekind, to protect the paint. Dave, |
I was going to pickup this russel heat wrap, but the guy at the counter said it was fiberglass and you needed sealer on it. I'm not sure thats the way I want to go. What is the most popular thing to use to wrap the hoses in?
I already have the FM Bowser heat sheild, is this enough protection for everything else? I want to relocate the AFM and protect it, but I'm not that far yet. EDIT: Also, should I wrap the coldside pipe after the intercooler? I'm not sure if this would even help, I've seen it done before and was just wondering. |
would fiberglass be good for a heatshield? I mean the thing itself is used almost everywhere for insulation, hmmm, maybe i'll find out pretty soon, lol...
|
Well it's not fiberglass per se, but a cloth like wrap with fiberglass in it. I've never held it so I don't know, but thats what he told me. Wouldn't the glue on normal fiberglass melt?

Get one of these https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5990
and wrap the heater hoses and you will be good. The blanket fits on all internal wastegate turbos. You just put a slit in the blanket for the actuator rod. |
