What lock washers do I need?!

DAMNIT!!! For the 4th time!!! My turbo studs are backing out of the manifold! I put 4 helicoils in the manifold for strong threads. I put in brand new studs, a flat washer, a normal lock washer then two nuts. High temp loctite and STILL! the studs are coming out of the manifold, not the nuts off the studs. Will those FM washers hold the studs in as well? If they will hold both the studs and nuts to the manifold I will buy them RIGHT now.

The first time they came out it was the blown out threads on the manifold. Retapped and they did it again. Helicoiled it and they backed out again. I figured it was the manifold threads, but now I am certain I need some sort of expensive fancy lock washer. Damnit I hate Greddy.

Well I ordered them anyway. If the turbo still comes loose, anyone wanna buy a Greddy kit?

it depends on what size you helicoiled the manifold for, but the FM ones are 8mm, which fit the stock greddy kit just fine. I dunno if you went bigger with the helicoils, but the 8mm are tight on the stock studs.

I did the stock M8. Good point though, I hadn't even thought about the size.

shinobix 04-24-2007 08:55 PM

dunno if this helps any, but i re-tapped all my greddy turbo stuff for 3/8" threads lol. no more still metric sizes for me. and no more nuts.

jayc72 04-24-2007 08:57 PM

3/4? Are you sure about the size, maybe 3/8"? :)

shinobix 04-24-2007 08:59 PM

yup 3/4" my friend. i love huge bolts.

If you can,try to get some stover nuts.

Stover nut+nord-lock washers=never come loose again.

miataspeed1point6 04-24-2007 10:38 PM

What are stover nuts? I can't seem to find them locally. I searched on google and it looked like the dish on the bottom is what makes them special?

EDIT: After a closer look at the FM washers, would a serrated nut work best? Or would locking the nut with the FM washer cause them to spin out as well?

y8s 04-24-2007 10:57 PM

get the copper deformed (stover) nuts from ATP. and if the studs are backing out, get some nordlocks. FM sells them...

did you tighten the studs in the turbo til they were wrist tight?

miataspeed1point6 04-24-2007 11:05 PM

I already bought those washers, they are on their way as of tommorow. The first time I tightened the studs around wrist tight (turbo was still in car), but this last time I tightened them pretty tight. I am heading over to ATP right now to get the stovers. I fucking hate this thing coming loose. At first I notice a loss in boost, then the car is slow as balls and then it starts to sputter from the manifold. I ripped it all out in hopes of fixing it and then this, AGAIN.

Sigh....it's always something with this car.

If I get 4 of each, and use the 4 FM nord lock washers I should be good to go? What else if ANYTHING do I need to lock this thing down?

EDIT: on those studs, will they fit the Greddy setup? I mean the space between the threads will fit inside the turbo flange and the short threads are long enough to grab?

I retapped mine for 10mm bolts. That solved the loosening problem on the stock Greddy log....until 2 of the bolts sheared. Replaced the stock with the ETD, put in the FM studs, and haven't had a problem in 5000 miles so far.

Got pictures? 3/4" is nearly 20mm, is this on a greddy manifold?
