Interesting to see that Belfab raised the price on their 1.6 piston set by $40 in the last week or so...
thanks for that

Some background information on my car...

I bought the car about a year ago as I was looking for some cheap top down fun. I also fancied a rear wheel, front engine car. I had (and still have) a 4 wheel drive WRX, rear wheel, mid engine MR2 and front wheel drive mini.

Not long after I bought the car I found out I was able to fit a turbo charger to it. I started collecting bits to modify the car and after speaking to a UK based mx5 specialist ordered the greddy kit, along with emerald ecu.

Last year about this time the car went off the road for a few months and all my modifications were done, including a respray in lapis blue.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the car before we started stripping it, but I'll post a small selection below.

Those are some pictures from the original build of the car. It was then painted and looked like this:

So this brings me up to date. The car hasn't done much for the winter. I've driven it every few weeks to keep it running, but it has pretty much sat on my drive. Now the better weather is coming I've decided to do some more modifications to the car.

As I'd said in an earlier post most of the bits have been ordered.

The past week we've stripped the gearbox, diff and engine out of the car. I am fitting a new diff, prop etc. I am putting the 1.8 caliper brackets on and rebuilding the engine.

I will give the head and block a clean up and hopefully the rest of my parts arrive shortly.

Only got these so far

I actually bought the interior from tabs. I don't know the guy but he did come over as a bit of an ***. The interior arrived pretty dirty like it was smoke damaged

Where abouts are you from in the UK? Also what are you even going to use the car for with 400rwhp? Seems way over if its for track and not drag.

I'm in Scotland

I don't really drag or track the car. As previous post, it's because I can.

Sorry there has not been much update but I've been waiting on parts arriving and the engine coming back from the machine shop.

Today my turbo and water injection arrived and I also picked the engine up from the machine shop. They're lapped the valves in (I've bought brand new standard valves). They've done a 5 angle job on the head and built the bottome end. They did say the 4 pistons were all slightly different sizes. Only by a small amount, but no 2 were exactly the same.

I'll be building the ending back up tomorrow night

Sorry not had an update for a while. Plenty of work been going on but waited nearly 4 weeks on the ARP studs, turbo manifold and coolant re-route arriving from america. The arp studs arrived a week ago. The turbo manifold only today.

Anyway the engine went away to the machine shop to get worked on. They were fitting the forged pistons with overbore, the oil pump etc. They also cut the valve seats etc. I then got the block and head back to be put back together.

We put the valves etc back into the cylinder head and then built the engine back up on the stand.

The 800cc injectors were also fitted.

IMG_0097.jpg

while the engine was out I decided to get the engine bay painted. I had the outside painted Lapis Blue last year which is a mazda colour and thought I would get the bay done to match

IMG_0071.jpg

IMG_0079.jpg

IMG_0080.jpg

IMG_0081.jpg

mean while the diff was put back on. I replaced the fuel lines while the car was in pieces. Painted the front subframe and calipers and probable a number of other things I can't think of at the moment.

IMG_0090.jpg

IMG_0091.jpg

then I fitted the clutch and flywheel back onto the engine and lowered it back into the car.

IMG_0100.jpg

IMG_0101.jpg

IMG_0102.jpg

IMG_0103.jpg

The turbo and external wastegate arrived.

IMG_0078.jpg

IMG_0074.jpg

Just as a comparison here is the greddy turbo compared to this turbo

IMG_0107.jpg

IMG_0106.jpg

Seen as the manifold arrived today I thought I'd test fit it roughly (without any bolts) to see how the turbo will sit. I need to clock the turbo but it does sit quite low compared to the greey unit.

So not much left now before I can get it running. I have to fit up the turbo, the coolant re-route (I'll wrap the manifold). Make up a custom downpipe and fit the water injection.

The first problem I see is my current intercooler pipes wont match up with the turbo. I will need to get some form of S shaped pipe made up.

From this image, it looks like the turbo-to-intercooler pipe probably gets smooshed when it passes the sway bar and/or AC lines. If so, you should redo the plumbing entirely to suit this huge turbo.

The current set up is stripe's intercooler pipe with my own intercooler. It is pretty tight with the sway bar. I did have the air con previously but have removed it now as it is never really too hot here.

I've seen other cars with very short pipes that go through the two holes in the slam panel. Where can I get a setup like that?

What is it with people's attitude?

Didn't your mum ever teach you "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"?
