R Theory Motorsports Hood Vent Group Buy
Hey Miataturbo.net, R Theory Motorsports is holding a group buy on our NA and NB Hood vents. We offer both versions in a 3 panel and 5 panel configuration. Our vents are designed to follow the factory hood bracing, thus minimizing losses in hood rigidity while giving the hood vents an OEM plus look. All vent locations are also carefully placed to ensure proper air evacuation from under the hood, keeping your street or track car temps cool.
All kits include stencils for cutting your hood and black rivets for mounting the vents to your hood. Black rubber trim is available for an extra $10 if you will be mounting the vents under your hood. Semi gloss Black powder coat is available for an additional $45. All prices are in USD and includes shipping to the Lower 48 States and Canada. Shipping elsewhere is available for an additional fee, please email rtheorymotorsports@gmail.com for a shipping quotation. Pricing Structure is as follows: 5-10 PEOPLE: NA3) $145 NA5) $185 NB3) $145 NB5) $185 11-15 PEOPLE: NA3) $140 NA5) $175 NB3) $140 NB5) $175 16+ PEOPLE: NA3) $130 NA5) $165 NB3) $130 NB5) $165 In addition to the group buy discounts, if we hit 20+ people I will be raffling off one set of vents to one of our group buy customers! Last day to leave a deposit is Friday, November 3rd, 2017. Manufacturing takes roughly 1-2 weeks, orders will be shipped out shortly after. Powder coat adds roughly 1 week to the lead time. Any photos from the underside of the NA hood? Substructure remains intact?

Our design allows you to rivet the vents underneath the skin directly to the hood frame, so no fasteners will be shown on the outside skin! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b8b46f362f.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0c92882d6d.jpg |
Hey these look great! That said when designing these was the primary goal to keep the factory hood bracing while flowing air? I've read numerous other threads where the the goal was placement in very specific locations for maximum efficiency when flowing air out of the engine bay. Your three and five vent setup looks to have a bit different placement then other setups, but seems to have more open area out of the engine compartment. Always to good to see more innovation in the community keep it up.

Interested.
bytevenom you interested? Any pre/post data on under hood temps if you ran any back to back tests with two hoods or something like that? |
Right as I'm shopping for hood vents! NA5 set ordered!

In for data

At this moment I have the video of the Wool Tuft test posted above which illustrate at what speeds you can expect them to start evacuating air, and which parts of the vents flow the greatest amounts of air. |
Hood vents are pretty well documented to function in the areas you are offering, but just out of curiosity, how is the wool tuft test (looks like string to me) effected by normal airflow over the hood and body? Wouldn't the tufts move in a visually similar fashion on top of a ventless hood?

No.
They will basically lay flat without some sort of lift. |

Am I wrong to expect that vents should have minimal flow through them with the car stationary if the radiator fans are on? This is assuming a well fitting undertray and a radiator cowl.

For those curious about back to back temps, it's too cold here for me to get reliable data on the street without doing several pulls that would put me in trouble. I'll hopefully be going to the track today or Sunday weather permitting. Will post my findings after I come back. Also I've received emails and comments on social media from people saying they'll hop in the group buy once we reach the 10-15 people price point. If you're waiting for that price point I would encourage you to hop in on the group buy. It looks like with the number of people saying they'll hop in, we will easily exceed 10 people. :)

Looking forward to see the results! Do you have templates ready for NA version, if we want to install them from the underside of the hood?

Thanks for bringing another option to market! If you guys happen to do another tuft test soon, it might be useful to trim your wool tufts to the approximate length of the competitors. When comparing youtube vids, your lengths look twice, if not three times as long.
I'm no expert in this stuff, nor do I know if a longer tuft is a more stringent test, but getting them a bit more inline for apples-to-apples may help with the results I see between the vids. |
Just an update, we managed to hit the 11-15 people milestone. Last day to pre-order is this Friday so act quick if you're still on the fence!
I managed to go to the track and ran 5 lap sessions back to back. Same driver and same car, first run with the vents taped up and second run with the vents opened. With the vents taped up we saw water temps as high as 210 Degrees Fahrenheit. With the vents open water temps got up to 203 degrees. Ambient temperature was only 60 degrees, i'm expecting much bigger differences in the summer heat. Results will also vary based on what kind of ducting and other aerodynamic mods you have. In hindsight it would have been nicer to get you folks some data-logs. If I manage to squeeze in one more track day this year I'll fetch more data.https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a261fb1408.jpg |
Nice, data is king. Is the rubber trim for the underhood install custom formed?
