Didn't have my SLR with me on the track so you get a crappy iphone pic.

Things were going well up until I got on the gas after turn 11 at Laguna Seca. The back end kicked up as the hub sheered and the tire exited out the rear. Came back down on the rotor which snapped in half. As the car came to a rest I saw the wheel rolling by off into the sand trap. I'll have to get my friend's video who was right behind me. He didn't get it as the hub snapped, but you can see the wheel still rolling off.

Overall not too much damage, but without an extra rear hub and some welding gear + 2.5" exhaust pipe I had to take the car home. Getting it on the trailer was fun.

That's scary stuff right there. I always figured the hub nut would prevent that from happening? lol

TheDriver 09-15-2012 10:03 PM

Whoa.......that's a man's Miata. I could've sworn this was going to be in a drag racing app after that first pic. How long had it been since you replaced the hubs before this?

GeneSplicer 09-15-2012 10:22 PM

Dam, that's impressive! Glad to see it wasn't any worse like it could have been. Obviously you had no indication of it failing before it let go?

Factory hub? I have been considering pre-emptively swapping to the V8R hubs/axles.

orion4096 09-15-2012 11:12 PM

Factory hub - I think. I'll take a closer look tomorrow. The previous owner's notes said the bearings were replaced and studs were pressed in, but nothing about new hubs. I just e-mailed v8r to see if I can get a set of hubs from them.

No warning before it let go. Just happened as soon as I got on the gas.

18psi 09-16-2012 01:02 AM

wow....

mr_hyde 09-16-2012 01:11 AM

Props for having huge nuts! Glad the car damage was minimal - now you have a baller story to tell.

Mobius 09-16-2012 01:20 AM

Yes. Wow.

What's left of the hub after I pressed it out of the knuckle and pressed out the lugs. I guess it's not a stock hub. It's 26 spline, however the diameter is bigger. Only thing I could match it with was an escort zx2, but not sure if the spline size is right.

I've seen this on a V8R car in Dallas.

AllSystemsNominal 09-16-2012 04:30 PM

Holy hell. hope this isnt a common thing. Does this happen to the SM guys ?

pmhaddad 09-16-2012 04:39 PM

You are my hero.

umm considering that SM guys dont run 400 whp on slicks im gonna have to say no. This looks to be just a to much torque and not enough give situation to me. Must have been a hell of a ride.

ZX-Tex 09-16-2012 06:36 PM

I just love it when someone posts something like this right before I have a race weekend scheduled.

18psi 09-16-2012 07:10 PM

Don't worry, you only have 399 torque, you'll be fine:D

tincan 09-16-2012 09:16 PM

Good the car didnt get smacked up. That is a pretty cool failure. How does the other hub look?

MartinezA92 09-16-2012 09:17 PM

I'm sad.

Another reason for me to not go past 200 whp.

orion4096 09-16-2012 09:48 PM

The car is still on the trailer so I haven't had a chance to check the other hub. I was hoping to replace the broken one and drive the car off, but I haven't found a replacement that works. If no one wants to inspect the hub I might ghetto mig weld it back together so I can bolt on a wheel and push or drive it off.

2 and 11 exit are especially bad on the right side at Laguna as I'm in third gear (or second if I get stuck behind someone) and applying lots of throttle on exit. The back end always kicks out on those turns. Most of the right hand stuff is high speed except for the bottom of the corkscrew but there isn't isn't a lot of room before 9.

k24madness 09-17-2012 02:58 AM

Whoa....You must be making some torque! IIRC Dean lost a hub at Laguna prior to the V8R upgrade.

It would be interesting to see if there are signs of a crack initiation site and crack propigation (fatigue failure). I suspect that a lot of that has been smeared away but it might be there. A close look with a microscope or some photos with a high-res camera using a macro lens would do the trick.

Here are some photos of fatigue failures.

I think I see 'beach marks' or fatigue crack looking marks on image DSC_6768, right in the center, in the lower part of the failure area. Same thing on DSC-6762, lower portion, slightly to the right. Hard to say for sure, both pieces are pretty beat up as one would expect.

Jr125 09-17-2012 05:26 PM

wow!! thats scary, lucky I only have 200tq.

psreynol 09-18-2012 08:54 AM

awesome. you drove the wheels off that beotch

Not much to see, but here's a video of a friend in his 911 a few seconds behind me. The v8r people are out until Monday so I have to wait until then to get new hubs.

And another pic. Supposedly, the tire hit the tire wall and was on its way back.

R the coilovers bent or is that an optical ilusion?

soviet 09-21-2012 11:46 AM

Yay for breaking unbreakable parts!

rlogan 09-26-2012 09:02 PM

Yeah, this has happened a couple of times...the guy in Dallas that lost one had about 475hp, not sure on torque.

Cliff's LS3. I believe Saini broke it once and then they fixed it and Cliff blew-up the engine later that day.

JasonC SBB 09-27-2012 12:15 PM

I thought V8's were supposed to be reliable?

Here are some pics of the other rear hub that was on the car. It's definitely on its way to destruction. A thin crack is winding around the base at the same point of failure as the other one. The new v8r hubs are noticeably beefier in the problem area and other spots.

How much are the V8R hubs? What's different about them?
Anyone have pictures of one?
