Hi guys,
Thought you might like to see what I got upto this evening: Started like this: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1341098189 Then started cutting (used a dremel with some heavy duty cutting discs for the bonnet skin): https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1341098189 Ended up with a big hole like this: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1341098189 Just sitting there - not bonded on or painted (obviously): https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1341098189 And from the rear: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8152/7...f1820281_b.jpg It's a Subaru Forester S Turbo scoop from the year 1999 like this one: http://www.j-ucar.com/photo/subaru/s...er_0001_05.jpg And a bonus pic - I test fitted my GT3071R tonight and couldn't resist a photo: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8141/7...20a723fe_b.jpg |
Looks like it will look good once it's finished. Are you going to add any structure back across the interior of the opening?
That hole is huge. Looks like it ought to do the trick.
I still can't bring myself to start cutting mine. |
I want. But don't want to. It my hood. Call it fear of messing up the one hood I have. If I found another '99 hood in silver it would be game on. Drunk
Does it sit flat on the hood or are there gaps in places?
Show pic of underside?
Sits perfectly flat on the leading edge but there's a tiny gap at the rear because the centre of the scoop overlaps the hump on the bonnet. Nothing huge - we're talking 1-2 mm. Nothing that couldn't be sorted with a couple of rivets. Didn't take a pic from the underside but will do.
I think a simple approach would be to cut the 3 round holes out from underneath and trim with some door edging but that wouldn't flow nearly as much air.
I wouldn't worry a out cutting out the structure. It's still got plenty of strength left in it and isn't floppy at all.

Looks functional. I like it. Where did you get the scoop from?
Based on where your hood pins are, and assuming you are not using the stock latch, you might have the same issue with your hood that I did. I added a scoop that is similar in size to that one. The hood is still strong enough with the removed bracing. However at medium to high speed the front edge of the hood will lift up from the top edge of the bumper and open up a gap. This is the opposite of what you want. I added some bracing to pull the front edge of the hood back down and now it is not an issue. Scoop https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1341195801 |
Weld 1/8" flat to each support after cutting them or just leave the supports in.
