Any Oregon Raceway Park members?

Anyone an ORP member? I am contemplating trekking up there for an HPDE day at the end of July.

curly 06-11-2012 01:41 AM

Member? No. Occasional visitor, yes.

Which day are you considering, the July 28th one? Most of the locals just attend Porsche or BMW club days. They're fairly relaxed, well ran, and cheaper. The Team Continental and SCCA days can be a little more spendy, crowded, and with less run time.

There's a July 14-15 day with PCA that I may be attending. My schedule rotates, so I have lots of days off but they're not always easily predictable.

See here for a few more details?
http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=59086

No matter what though, make the trek, you won't regret it.

curly 06-11-2012 01:45 AM

And what car are you planning on bringing? I need to know if I should bring my tail pre zip-tied between my legs or just cut my balls off completely.

Savington 06-11-2012 03:23 AM

Just Rover for now, but if Theseus runs I'll bring it too.

Rover is the priority right now - all of the California lap records are set between November and February so that's when I hope to have Theseus back up and running with all of its upgrades.

bbundy 06-11-2012 11:23 AM

I haven’t been there yet either. Still trying to figure out a day to do the Ridge as well. Trying to fit it in with a road racing and minimal autocross schedule this year I’m finding some hard limits to money and time.

Broke the PRO3 BMW E30 I was using one race it still sits with the engine out of it So I bought a spec Miata that hasn’t raced since 2006 that I’m trying to get prepped while at the same time rebuilding and swapping back to the 2.0L in the beast for National tour Autocrosses the first couple weekends in July.

Buttonwillow chump car next weekend as well.

My car hobby seems to be intense but lacking clear focus this year.

jmann 06-11-2012 11:48 AM

Brian Kelly and I well be at ORP Thursday with Auto Cross Club Oregon for their once a year HPDE. Went last year for the first time at the track and it is nice and very tech. with alot of elevation change. Hope they have some facilities in this year, it gets hot.

Andrew another track you well really want to visit soon is The Ridge Motorsport Park, It is a GREAT track.

curly 06-11-2012 12:36 PM

Really? I've heard mixed reports. Worth it if you're close, but if, like me, it's the same 2.5 hour drive away as ORP it's probably not worth it in the long run. Just from the videos I know I'm going to enjoy ORP more.

jmann 06-11-2012 01:14 PM

diff. strokes, It's one of my favorite tracks along with Thunderhill.

stormin'norman 06-11-2012 01:39 PM

The Ridge is mediocre at best..

ORP July 14-15 with PCA. Going to be a great weekend. Hopefully see some of you there.

jmann 06-11-2012 01:53 PM

What didn't you like about it?

stormin'norman 06-11-2012 05:50 PM

Flow. There's hardly any flow or rhythm compared to ORP. I'd say about 60% of the track is enjoyable. What I really don't care for is the "corkscrew" complex that is T13-14. It's so painfully slow. I don't care what car you are in.. even my Lotus friends aren't able to carry speed through there.

Once you've driven ORP CCW.. it's hard to be pleased elsewhere.

jmann 06-11-2012 07:57 PM

I have driven ORP. I think most of the Ridge flows quite nicely, especially going up the hill through 2,3 4,5, that is a high speed blast, turn 6 [carousel] is a really nice tech. one that can be power steered around and the compression into 8 and the link inbetween that and 9 is really tech. and fast if done right and then its balls out into 10 up the hill into 11, thenit slows some after that with some sharp cornersuntil you come out of the corkscrew, but hitting 16 just right so you are screaming down the front straight is fun. Most everyone I've talked to says it is one of their favorite tracks that they have been on. Don't get me wrong, I like ORP, hell I like any track where I can go fast. My favorite is still Thunderhill, and Texas motorsport ranch is also a nice one.

I am an Infineon fan, so my standards are impossibly high :giggle:

We'll be there July 28th.

Mobius 06-11-2012 10:44 PM

I will be at ORP on the 14th of this month. 7/28 actually fits my schedule, I might be able to attend.

I haven't had the pleasure to head South yet. Just the usual suspects here in OR and WA.

That said I think ORP CCW will still stack up well.

What club is running 7/28 at ORP? Not seeing it on msreg.com..

edit: Oh and ps Andrew.. I was that crazy guy who emailed you last week about built 1.6L advice with which you replied bp vvt or bust.

Just putting a screenname to a email.. so hello. :D

Mobius 06-12-2012 12:33 AM

It's not on Motorsportsreg, which is why I missed it as well. It's an ORP Club day. Minimum event commitment for being a member in the ORP Club is ... one event. I will talk to them on Thursday while I'm there. I am concerned that, depending on format, I am not yet experienced enough to sign up. It will be my 5th event at that point.

jmann 06-12-2012 12:44 AM

Mobius Do you have to be a club member to run or can anyone run?

Ahh an "owners" day.

In that case.. come join ORPCA in July and Sept. We put on good weekends. :)

Don't forget your annual inspection either..

Mobius 06-12-2012 02:10 AM

My point was that anyone can sign up for a single ORClub event. It's 350 for the day. Includes lunch. It's just not listed on MSR. So I may go, unless it's an open track unlimited passing type event, which may be beyond my current comfort zone.

Anyone can run - you just have to become a member by paying your moneys like anyone else. According to the website, you can do it on a single-event basis. No 5-day minimum or anything like that.

Those are the good ones.

jmann 06-12-2012 12:25 PM

Mobius Thanks, I was under the impression that there was like a 3 grand membership fee, guess I need to look into it more as I would like to run there couple times a year and the open passing, no point by days are the ones I like. My favorite is Eddies [Adrenaline Racing] invitational at PIR, it's only about 20 or 25 drivers and no groups, also running with Bullet Racing Trackday at the Ridge, also invitational and open, no point passing. Well I'm loaded up for ORP, leaving tomorrow, weather supposed to be perfect, not to cool, nor to hot. Thanks John

curly 06-12-2012 01:04 PM

Yeah, they list the $3000 memberships first, just scroll down.

At their $2200 or $2500 membership or whatever level it is, the days are around $200 a piece, smoking deal for what you get.

Mobius 06-12-2012 01:04 PM

My plan is to run open-passing events - I just want to make sure that I am qualified as a driver. I have no ego when it comes to driving. I will solicit opinions Thursday as to whether I should sign up for the 28th. At that point I will have 4 days under my belt, including this Thursday at ORP.

Andrew - you are of course going to be selling TSE BBBK's out of the back of the trailer, right? :)

Edit: John - your sig (hint) has no info about your vehicle, so I won't know which car is you. See you there. I'm in the green #004.

jmann 06-12-2012 01:11 PM

So you well be there Thurs. I well look for your car. I well be in a red 99 with a APR wing on the back and a 949 air dam on the front. And yes I agree you need to stay in your comfort zone when driving. I have been doing it for 40 some years. Look forward to talking to you.

curly 06-12-2012 01:12 PM

He wouldn't get much business. Compared to PIR, ORP is very light on brakes. The hard braking zones are nicely spaced so your brakes have a chance to cool a bit.

Of course Andrew will most likely drive like a man and prove me wrong, but I've heard this from other drivers, not just my ----- footed all-season'ed ass.

edit: ftfy.

If you're going to be at the 7/28 day, I can definitely bring parts from our catalog as long as I have a couple of days of advance notice. ;)

jmann 06-12-2012 01:36 PM

Curly well you also be there Thurs?, also forgot to post my nbr. its 28

I put on the event last year for Eddie. This year's is on August 30. Hope you had a good time and come back. Limiting the number of participants severely and driver screening will be essentially invite/known quantity only now.

We had some parade lappers last year that were sent home..

jmann 06-12-2012 03:01 PM

Norman I'm already signed up and paid. I talked to Eddie at the Ridge a couple weeks ago. Thanks

Nope, so far my one and only track day is July 14th at ORP. I hope to get another at PIR at some point, and maybe another at who knows where before the season is over...

Mobius 06-12-2012 04:46 PM

I knew there was a reason I couldn't do this, that weekend's booked with family time. I should make the September PCA event.

jmann 06-12-2012 05:50 PM

Curly too bad, I was looking forward to meeting you. That is one perk of being 68, you can do all the track days you want or the boss well let you.:hustler:

Sept was brutal hot last year. Eddie brought the only AC'd trailer in the paddock . Pretty much lived in it all weekend.

I already know Curly quite well but it will be good to put some more faces to SN's. Though I don't frequent MT.net much as I just have a lowly 1.6.

Joe Mauch 06-13-2012 09:52 AM

ORP is a lot of fun, off camber and blind turn madness.

Dang it 28th 29th is SCCA double regional at The Ridge assuming they don't cancel it again. Trying to get all my licensing requirements out of the way for national license and de-novice myself. I need to go racing.

Mobius 06-15-2012 01:47 AM

Today was a seriously good time with Mr. Hyde and Jmann. I discovered this track requires a tighter belt than PIR - I ate mine. It somehow inverted itself around the crank pulley - almost a Mobius strip, as it were. I found this after the second session. Searching my toolbox, I discovered I had packed my spare, but not my backup spare, so I called it a day after replacing the belt.

I took a ride in one of the 2 Nissan GT-Rs roaring around. The driver asked me what I thought about the car - I answered "it's more." More power, more grip, more brakes than my car. Other than that, his lines were no different than mine, except for one corner. I think I disappointed him not being blown away by the sooper sooper awesomeness of his car. After the ride, he did himself a dis-service by furthering my internal opinion that most (all) drivers of track cars in the 100k range are secretly stars of their own Flatout video by telling me "You've now ridden in Godzilla. Tell your friends!"

And Jmann, in his much less than 100k miata, was chasing him down :)

Edit: and the unspoken "more": much more expensive. His consumables budget is probably 5x ours, possibly 10x.

stormin'norman 06-15-2012 01:49 AM

Off topic:

Mobius I heard there was a SC'd green NB on Flex at the PCA autocross last weekend? Was that you? Younger buddy of mine was there in a '90 Red NA.

That was me. I talked with him of the goodness of Xida/6UL from 949 and various other products from Trackspeed, so Emilio & Andrew owe me a beer. His father was in an M3 and it was quite entertaining to hear him cheer every time his dad hit a cone, and we all high-fived when he spun.

Autox in the South Paddock at PIR is interesting. It's extremely bumpy. You learn a lot about people's suspensions watching them at that site. I need to use third a lot more; I ran out of 2nd several times.

I had a blast at ORP Thursday. It was nice to meet Mobius. I actually chased down the red GT-R and once I got past him he was gone from my mirrors by the next lap. Not bad for a $1,400 girly car! :jerkit:

Mobius 06-16-2012 10:52 AM

Nice!

jmann 06-16-2012 02:41 PM

Here is the only video I got, it was the last session and I was going to try to get the gray GTR as he was the fastest of the two GTR's there and I had been hounding his tail a couple sessions before for several laps, so we turned up the psi, but he got away before I could clear the other cars as quick as he did. It wasn't open passing. so had to wait for passing zones :vash: Also I can't figure out what happened to the white Mustang GT500, he must have missed a shift but he damn near stopped in the middle of turn 14, almost had a miata for a rear bumper.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbe3R...ature=youtu.be

mr_hyde 06-17-2012 03:03 AM

Your GT-R looked a little faster than mine. I always went out behind him so I guess it's good he couldn't catch me in 20 minutes :giggle:

jmann 06-17-2012 11:38 AM

Yeh he was the faster of the two, I got around the red one in session 2 also, but the guy driving the silver one was a really good driver from Texas and I don't think I could have got him, but it was sure fun trying and it had to have been bugging him seeing that red miata on his rear the whole time in session 3.

Savington 07-30-2012 06:46 PM

What a track. I prefer CCW over CW, but I'm not sure I would want to race going CCW - far more opportunity to wad a car up. I got down into the 1:59s going CW, and I don't recall how fast I went CCW.

I'll post up some video later this week once I get caught up at the shop.

curly 07-30-2012 07:51 PM

I've raced CW twice and CCW once, and I much prefer CCW as well. One of the main reasons I don't like CW as much as the oppertunity to loose the back end coming on to the straight and smash it into the wall. It's interesting that you "fear" CCW more, I don't remember many "oh ----" moments that direction.

This was with the red car? I'm doing 2:13s on all seasons and apparently only 155hp, sounds like you were really cooking. Glad you liked it, can't wait to see some vids.

Yep, red car on NT01s is the standard.

TurboTim 07-31-2012 09:50 AM

Needs more black car, but other than that, can't wait to see the videos!

Kind of like this, without the wall-smashiness

curly 08-01-2012 01:17 AM

Huh, looks familiar. Also seen: the reason I bought a gopro.

mr_hyde 08-01-2012 03:25 AM

I simply burn a second a lap there so I don't need to scrape skidmarks out of my shorts or my car off the wall. Someday I'll have the stones to take that turn at 10/10ths...:fawk:

Mobius 08-01-2012 03:44 AM

I don't think it takes stones, I think it takes downforce. You can't fake what you don't have.

My elbows locked farther :p

But seriously, for those who haven't driven the track, that corner is also a crest. Without downforce I don't see how one can take it full throttle in a miata at at boosted speed levels.

Savington 08-01-2012 03:58 AM

I would add that it's blind, but I think every corner at that track is blind so it goes without saying.

mr_hyde 08-01-2012 05:09 AM

I've got no downforce but the stones shrink tiny at that particular turn. That is one curb to stay away from too... :2cents:

curly 08-01-2012 05:22 PM

I do the same, in fact we were told to do so in the drivers meeting. The possibility of a second off your lap time is not worth the bigger possibility of a wadded up car.

The secret is actually in the curbing before the turn. Hit that, and your wheel will straighten out a bit. This will cause you to dive in for the apex, most likely loosing the rear end. That's what happened in my video. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a little lift on the right side from curbing or a vibration from the curbing in your video Mobius.

The good thing is they got rid of all the boulders in the infield, so going in the grass isn't as much of a deal.

Mobius 08-01-2012 06:01 PM

I see what you're saying. That would explain why I missed the apex by so much, which makes everything worse.

mr_hyde 08-01-2012 06:27 PM

There are a lot of curbs at ORP to stay away from. Fortunately, the exit of T14 (CW) is OK as long as you don't go past it. Each time I have walked the track, there has been a wheel eating canyon just past the curbing. You don't want to drop a wheel there. With the boulders gone, the safe thing to do there is to head into the tall grass and hope you don't get any snakes in the cab. :ugh:

jmann 08-08-2012 01:08 PM

1.59's CW, great time. I think the best I did was 2.02's, but found a shorting out wideband sensor harness when back home in the garage, so might be able to do a little better next year. Have never got to run it CCW, what would be turn 1 would be really fast as you would be going down hill into it.
