Anyone with an NHRA legal roll bar / cage in their car?

Looking for some examples for my GRM challenge car. I need to build a 5 point welded-in bar, as bolt in's require 6"x6" plates top and bottom to be legal, and where the hell are you gonna put those on a miata?

I know I need to talk to an NHRA inspector, but my main questions are these:
1. Is it legal to mount the main hoop to welded in plates on the leading edge of the rear deck like most of the bolt in bars? LINK - Everything I've read in the rules seems ambiguous.
2. Are the door bars allowed to have bends, and if so how many?

Probably won't find much help for NHRA here... Best bet would be to talk to an inspector or NHRA cage builder for clarification.

UTCC or $2010 challenge?

$2010, I'm a cheap ass. would be fun to take to the UTCC though.

It has been quite a while since I welded in a cage or had a cage welded into a drag car. If I recall, the door bar is supposed to pass between your shoulder and elbow when you are sitting in the car. You are not supposed to have bends pointing up or down, but you can have one pointing out towards the door to make room for the driver. I can not say for sure if you can have two bends in a door bar, but I have not seen a door bar with more than one bend.

As far as the main hoop meeting the floor, I have no idea. I never had a circumstance where that was an issue.

Right on - see you then, were you there last year? We brought the turbo BP festiva.

thanks for the clarification on the door bar miata2fast - I think I can get away with just a single bend in the door bar to clear my ultrashield seat.

I actually emailed Sean to see if I could get a subset of the components, but they're all pre-packed. challenge rules specify no more than 5 points if it's welded in and I want to keep it free in the budget. They're concerned about us convertible guys stomping everybody with super stiff lightweight chassis.

I also think with my 6'2" height, their harness bar is actually slightly too high - must be below the top of the shoulders while the main hoop must be 3" above the top of the helmet. I'm going to mount the seat damn near directly to the floor.

I've been the last few years since I live in Gainesville. Its a cool event.
I remember you guys chilling in front of the concession area. I thought that little thing was badass.

we had a blast last year, been wanting to do it for years and that was the first time we'd been. yea the concession area was a perfect place to setup shop and watch the rest of the autocross runs while sipping on the yuengling keg. met a lot of cool people too.
