Anyone tracking a Mazdaspeed Miata?
 

Any issues? How does the turbo hold up? Heat issues? Besides the turbo, where is all the extra weight?

The brakes sucks, the turbo holds up pretty well until you are manly enough to stretch the hardware, cat converters went out after a couple years, and I don't know why they are so heavy, but they are.

Buy an NA6/;NA8.

Last time I was out at CMP last fall I was hanging around with a group of guys who were tracking their MSM's. I think the biggest issues they had were studs backings out and breaking. Upgrading to Inconel studs fixed that they said. I know my instructor from that weekend did end up blowing his 5 speed on the way to Road Atlanta in December. He was running a bit more boost then stock though.

I am not positive. I know for sure he had a 5 speed. I had to use different gears at different points because I have the 6 speed in my car.

Yes. I am prepping a mazdaspeed miata for a track car presently.

I started a thread on component weights at Mazda-speed.com which lists out the "fat".

It is the wrong car to use if you want to be competitive/win your class... as it's built to be a fun "street car". To be a competetive race car you would need to change most everything. But, it can be made reliable enough to track/participate in race events. I think it can run in T3 with a few allowed upgrades for performance/reliability. In this configuration I am told your lap times will be right near a front running SM.

The turbo is really too small to run at the top end for very long. Too restrictive/hot. This becomes more problematic when you turn up the boost. The fuel system also becomes erradic with higher boost levels. When you unpgrade to free flowing intake/exhaust, boost creep can be an issue.

As far as the brakes, I've just been using the OEM "sport brakes" with Hawk Blues for track days and haven't had issues. But, I'm not pushing it too hard yet.

My club racing ITE set up is: BEIG ECU reflash, Garrett turbo upgrade, Walbro pump, 450 cc injectors, larger intercooler/piping and exhaust, Manifold studs, ACT organic clutch, engine mounts + all the safety gear. I haven't yet completed this stage of the car build, but I think it will be fun and hopefully stay reliable.

The MSM is a great track car for HPDE. It has a torsen T2R diff with larger axels than the regular miata, stronger 6 speed, and minor aero. The injectors flow more than people think and can support up to 230whp. The silver bilsteins are great shocks to throw a set of coilover collars and springs on. The factory sway bars are eibach with poly bushings. It needs an ebay intercooler, oil cooler, boost cut resistor mod, and studs for track duty. The factory catch can on the strut tower bar needs to be replaced with a aftermarket one as it likes to puke larger amounts of oil into the intake if you have a hard brake zone followed by a high g left turn. It will smoke like crazy for .5 miles of so and you will get black flagged. Honestly they are a great car and kind of got an undserved bad rap. I triple drove mine at several NASA events. Each weekend saw 7-8 hours of solid track time.

Mazdaspeed only came with a 6 speed. but it had a 4:10 rear end and a lowered rev limit making for some stump pulling useless gearing in the low gears combined with the added power of the turbo.

How much do they weigh?
I was stunned when I learned the 01-02 SE weighs 2600lbs. (unless my google search skills failed me)

Flyin miata weighed one and it was about 2500lbs

More like 2400lb, the MSM weighs a touch more. I think the MSM is heavy due to the turbo crap and vibrators, the 2001+ cars are heavy from the wheels and free candy.

So then what does the SE weigh?
Holy crap I wish I could get ahold of some SOLID numbers from a reputable source. All these google links and miata.net threads are dogcrap apparently. If the MSM weighs 2500lbs exactly, there's no way the SE weighs 2600.

Base and LS is supposed to be in the 2400lbs area correct?

Yes, there are people tracking MSMs. I did a full weekend at Laguna Seca weekend of the 31st and I was consistently stuck behind MSMs and NCs that refused to give point-bys. :crx: It's not that I'm that fast, but it was disappointing being stuck in traffic for the majority of my sessions.

ya sonny is fast in his and from what I remember reading based on the mod list has a piss ton of $$$ invested in it. You could build a car just as fast for less. You could get a 2000 model and build that up and go just as fast...or get a nice 94-97 model and spend even less.

There's no way an '01 SE is 2600 -- my '99 LP was 2300 from the factory, and there's no way there's 300 pounds of extra crap in an SE vs an LP. I'd believe 100, but not 300.
