AND... I just blew my 5 speed too :vash:
Any tips on where to find a 6 speed quick? I've got a race next weekend. |

the car shifted fine with the engine off. I drove the car and it was really bad in to 5, 6 and R. I changed out the shift knob, for the big heavy momo king i have and tried it again. It shifted fine into all gears. the slightly higher position and the heavy knob made a big difference. point is, if you have trouble with a 6 speed, get a heavy knob and figure out a way to make it sit a bit higher. I was starting to freak a little but it just goes to show, little changes can make a big difference.

Panic Motorsports, Parts Group, Mazmart, Planet miata. I believe all those guys are on the east coast. At least one of them should have a 6 speed and should be able to get it to you this week.

$800 + shipping including the shifter, plate and starter. Pretty reasonable considering I needed it ASAP

Yeah that sounds pretty good. I heard they can go all the way up to $1,000 at times. I bought a spare 6 speed for a decent price knowing if mine blows up I would end up paying top dollar for a replacement in a time of need.

That was a good idea. While looking I found old FS posts with prices as low as $500, but most of the vendors I could get one from quick wanted $1000-1400.
If you get a good enough price on one, even if you never use it you can probably re-sell it for a small profit. Side note: Planet Miata got it to me quick! Just showed up this afternoon. |
I think it may just be that the value of 6-speeds is now more fully appreciated than it used to be. I spent six months looking for a cheap 6-speed before blowing up my 5-speed at Laguna and needing to find one in short order. (got lucky, found a low mile MSM 6-speed locally for $900).
OTOH, I did manage to find a 3.9:1 diff at a reasonable price in that time frame, so it was one fewer part I had to hunt down when blowing up the 5-speed. --Ian |
Market price is $600 for a 100k-mile 99 box to $1200 for a 10k mile MSM box. If you need one in a pinch from a Miata vendor, you're going to pay top dollar.

I paid 750 for 60k 6 speed which I think is an ok price. the car-part site is good, they will negotiate and for larger items some places will deliver. its a good tool to find the best price then figure out which place is close and try to negotiate a price match.

I paid $550 for a spare one with 54k miles from a 2003. It also came with a shop manual. I know the car it came from so all in all I could not pass up the deal.
My car came with a rebuilt 6 speed so between the low hp and tq of the rotrex that spare trans will likely just collect dust. |
I blew several trannies last night.
