Brakes failed, time for BBK
 
Well I got to experience what it's like to drive on the streets with no brakes, luckily I have my E brake.

Had to drive roughly 7 miles home from a friends house and my brakes went out, not sure exactly what happened but I will be checking that tomorrow after I clean my underwear and get off of work.

I need suggestions on a Street/Track brake setup, which ones to go with? The car is my daily and sees the track every few months. Looking for a big upgrade in the front and maybe a 1.8 upgrade in the rear? Car sucks with regular 1.6 brakes and they have to go!

Suggestions?

What wheels do you have? If it'll fit, the end all setup is TSE's 11.75" kit and sport rears.

If the wheels aren't big enough, an FM or Goodwin kit, or used older TSE 11" kit will work, with 1.8 rears.

I wouldn't bother with m-tunes 11" front kit. If it doesn't get rid of the stock calipers, it doesn't seem worth the money.

It really all depends on your budget.

15x8 6uls. I believe the TSE 11.75" will fit under these if i'm not mistaken?

Damn, this thread made me think. Just today I was looking at the SAAB and trying to figure out how to make the emergency brake work. With the extra 10" of wheelbase I can't use the stocker unless I figure out a way to rig it up further aft. I actually thought about just skipping it and was literally sitting on the floor looking at it and thought about coming into a corner and having no brakes and wondered what my fabricated car would do hitting the wall at a high rate of speed.

Guess I need to think about it some more. Serious question, is an emergency brake required for tech on normal track days? Not that it should really influence my decision, but I never really thought about it and I didn't think many Locosts or other fabbed race cars had them.

My +36 15x8 6UL's (first gen) fit with the provided 5mm spacers in the TSE BBBK. I think the +40's need a 10mm spacer.

Do eet! Stomp the brakes with confidence and a pleasantly relaxed sphincter!


Edit: Sport rears + TSE BBK + Sport master cylinder & booster + Adjustable prop valve = bestest brakes.

If you can't find a good price, they're still great.

The compromise is in ultimate stopping power and feel from what I've read.

My 11" don't feel much different than stock brakes, and that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. But on a track they do actually have more stopping power, and heat resistance, or whatever you wanna call it. And they don't waste half the pad in taper.

Actually, if you want to go with Sport fronts, mine are sitting in a box with some rotors and pads and stuff. PM me if you're interested in my Big Box'O'Brakes. They were stopping my 2600lb car fine, but my speeds were getting higher, so I upgraded for safety.

Our 11.75s fit under 15x8 +36s with the supplied 5mm spacer. Combine our 11.75 front kit with our prop valve kit, Sport rears, and Sport master/booster, and you've got the best brakes available for the car.

really? it's a night and day difference in pedal feel to me compared to even the 10" rotors let alone the stock 9".

I stumbled onto FM's Little BBK a couple months ago and it looks like a great option for a streetcar. No personal experience with it, but I intend to go that route once I get my car back on the road. Very reasonably priced, fits a wilwood caliper over the stock rotors, and drops 4lbs per corner off the car.

I've been happy with my rebuilt OEM Sport brakes and Carbotech's. But my car doesn't see much street duty beyoned driving to the track.

When you really stomp on it with warm tires at the track it definitely has more stopping power than the stock 1.8 brakes. But on the street, I didn't feel like I felt a HUGE difference, either setup will lock up street tires when they're cold. Maybe my feet aren't terribly sensitive to that sorta thing. It's a big possibility, I don't DD the car enough.

The 1.6 brakes are more than adequate on the street. You better find out what's going on.

My master took a dump. Easy fix, but I figured why not get SS lines and good brakes while I'm at it.

I got off lucky on my oil leak. Cam seals. I'll be on the road tomorrow to continue breaking in the new engine.

#1 figure out what happened and fix it like y8s is saying
#2 in my street car, SE brakes all around + good pads + sport MC the car stops ridiculously good. my previous 99 had Wilwoods up front everything else stock and didn't even stop any faster/better.
#3 however if you track the car I'd go with what these track guys are suggesting because they know what they're talking about.

How did you "lose" current brakes on the street? Pedal on the floor? Overheated them by riding them? What
