Default Oil Cooler/Target Temps/Fab Party

I have a 13-row Earl's right now and its fed by a 2.5" hose and I still get 280* oil temps. I have an RX7 oil cooler sitting here but its so big that its tough to mount anywhere. I'm thinking about moving either cooler to the front heat exchanger system but not sure which to use...I'd like to use the smaller one if possible, of course.

Can anyone with sub 250* sustained oil temps chime in with a description of your set-up?

I know you've gotta keep the crash support bar to prevent anyone from destroying your heat exchangers but this is how i mounted my rx7 cooler. If i see higher than 280* oil temps ill will duct a bit of air right into the cooler and seal it off, it will get alot of air easily if need be.

While thinking of a solution to you needing to protect your exchangers i thought of how the drift guys do it since they crash all the time. Maybe some metal supports right behind the bumper would be a good idea?

Are those #10 fittings in the RX7 cooler? Any chance they're the same thread pitch as the Mocal plate?

I have brackets to mount it to the AC condensor mounting location...maybe that's the way to go and to adjust my plastic ducting. hmmmm

Rx7 oil cooler, mounted behind the front bumper above the radiator inlet. Recieves almost no direct airflow, oil temps are ~235*F at 350whp on 90*F days. No ducting or airflow consideration appears to be even remotely necessary - you can basically mount it anywhere you want.

Oil temps will vary greatly depending on where you measure them. My probe is by the oil filter, and it reads relatively high. A probe in the sump will read 40-50F less.

I guess I need to put the big one in...so much for desperately trying to save money.

my vote goes for airflow first. vent yer hood as it has aero and temp benefits. shroud the existing cooler and see what ya got.

for some reason the cooler doesn't look as big on tsb's car and there is something to be said for margin. i think i just changed my mind. go big do both.

I already have a vented hood and the cooler is ducted.

I sleep better at night knowing my motor is being fed through a 600hp-rated Precision core. The only thing that gives my intercooler ***** envy is my radiator.

Are you guys hacking out the beam or is there still metal behind the oil cooler? Anyone have a pic from above? I have some mounts to bolt it to the stock AC condenser so could put it there, and duct it.

I saw no higher than 235*F all weekend, however it was cold and raining out all weekend. The real test will be 100* ambient temps.

I would try a fan on oil cooler, it often helps. it is difficult to get oil cooler in air flow path, thus fan helps quite a bit. it also helps when you pull off track, and need air flow to cool oil before you park it.

I have a transmission fluid cooler fan in my truck with a manual switch. at 70mph, if I hit the fan, transmission temp drops 10F (lot more so at low speed). and this cooler is mounted in front of radiator.

I remember Gordon (guy with 350whp Rotrex) once had his cam installed low in front of radiator. in video, it was whisper quiet (when off throttle), no sound of air rushing by, just sound of an engine revving. that basically says air is pretty stagnate there.

How is air not moving in front of the radiator? If the air is not moving, how is the radiator working?

Hmmm, I have 20' of -10AN hose, fittings, 3 oil coolers here and not sure which direction to go in terms of which cooler and which location.

I don't mean completely not moving, but air is moving slow enough you can't hear it. In video car was going 100mph, I doubt air is going through radiator at 100MPH, air is also not exiting vented hood at 100mph. somewhere by the time air goes through radiator, air must of slowed down significantly.

I am guessing this is why radiator air intake hole can be significantly smaller than the size of radiator itself.

I can get some numbers next weekend on what the ebay 25row Mocal knockoff does... in fact, I'll get temps right before and after the cooler to show the differential. I'm in the refrigeration business and got nifty temp dataloggers. You know what I did for mine... but you'd have to remove the passenger lens - and fab.
