Comprehensive List of Books and Online Resources
Maybe creating a bit of a database on good references for various topics could be of value?
I'll try to keep this updated with new posts as best I can. Here's the list: Turbo Charging Maximum Boost - Corky Bell Fuel Injection and Tuning Performance Fuel Injection Systems HP1557 - Cramer & Hoffmann. Recommended by Joseph B. Chassis Setup and Design Prepare to Win - Carroll Smith Tune to Win - Carroll Smith Engineer to Win - Carroll Smith Screw To Win - Carroll Smith. Recommended by Rennkafer Note: Carroll wrote these books 25-35 years ago. The "technology" has changed, but the principles and physics have not. Competition Car Suspension - Allen Staniforth. Recommended by 1994ka24det Competition Car Composites- Simon McBeath. Recommended by 1994ka24det Chassis Engineering - Herb Adams. Recommended by mrjones2 Aerodynamics Competition Car Aerodynamics - Simon McBeath. Recommended by 1994ka24det Race Car Aerodynamics - Joseph Katz Vehicle Dynamics and Driving Going Faster - Carl Lopez (Great resource for a new track driver) Drive to Win - Carroll Smith Stand On It - Stroker Ace. Recommended by Double O 86 (fictional) Speed Secrets - Ross Bentley. Recommended by robertcope Data Acquisition Data Power - Buddy Fey. Recommended by mrjones2 Analysis Techniques for Racecar Data Acquisition - Segars. Recommended by plucas Website Resources Brian Beckman's Physics of Racing Recommended by rccote. Engineering or Math Intensive Resources - for the serious gearheads. *Purchase at your own risk!* Race Car Vehicle Dynamics - William and Greg Milliken Aerodynamics of Road Vehicles - Hucho. Recommended by plucas Fundamentals of Aerodynamics - Anderson. Recommended by plucas Low-Speed Wind Tunnel Testing - Barlow. Recommended by plucas Chassis Design - Milliken. Recommended by plucas Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics - Gillepse. Recommended by plucas The Shock Absorber Handbook - Dixon. Recommended by plucas Tire and Vehicle Dynamics - Hans Pacejka. Recommended by plucas |
I'd like to recommend Stand On It by Stroker Ace.
It is the end-all, be-all race car driver book. :bigtu: |
Shouldn't RCVD be in chassis setup and design?

Ross Bentley's Speed Secrets books are also very good.

OP left out "Screw To Win" aka "Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners, and Plumbing Handbook"
Good material and newer than the original three (though still a bit dated)... very useful. |

Here are some books I bought while in Afghanistan
Competition Car Suspension--
Amazon.com: Competition Car Suspension: A Practical Handbook (9781844253289): Allan Staniforth: Books
Competition Car Composites-- And of course Competition Car Aerodynamics-- |

I would add:
Herb Adams chassis book: Chassis Engineering - Herb Adams - Google Books Data Power by Buddy Fey: Amazon.com: Data Power: Using Racecar Data Acquisition : A Practical Guide to : Selection and Setup Data Interpretation Trackside Operation (9781881096016): Buddy Fey: Books Both are dated but an excellent primer for understanding chassis setup & how to interpret data traces. Also, good luck finding Buddy's book. I had 3 copies and sold them for over $300 each(!) back in the day (buddy told me to). |
Aerodynamics:
Race Car Aerodynamics by Joseph Katz Aerodynamics of Road Vehicles by Hucho (Lots of Math) Fundamentals of Aerodynamics by Anderson (Lots of Math) Low-Speed Wind Tunnel Testing by Barlow (Lots of Math) Chassis / Dynamics / Suspension: Race Car Vehicle Dynamics by Milliken (Lots of Math) Chassis Design by Milliken (Math...) Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics by Gillepse (Lots of Math but better than RCVD) The Shock Absorber Handbook by Dixon (very detailed and math intensive) Tire and Vehicle Dynamics by Hans Pacejka (Awesome book! but lots of math) Data Acquisition: Analysis Techniques for Racecar Data Acquisition by Segars (Lots of Math) All of these are great in my opinion but all are also engineering books. |

Under Turbocharging you can add "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes. Its pretty old, but full of good info, it has some things to offer that Maximum Boost does not.
and under EFI you can add "Engine Management Advanced Tuning" by Banish. Regardless of the name Id say its not that advanced. It certainly coveres more than some of the overly simplified tuning resources out there, but if you dont know whats in this book, you probably shouldnt be tuning. I think that the Megasquirt megamanual would be a nice addition to that section, as would the pgmfi.org library (its a Honda specific page but has great advice on tuning theory for newbies) Also, I think that some of the NACA archives would be a good addition to this thread as well. Ill have to look up a few of the good ones I remember. There was one on water injection (They called it 'internal cooling') that had data that showed me how backwards most peoples opinions are on the subject. |

You guys are pouring on the knowledge here.
Plucas, based on the list above...you are not someone I want to run into at a cocktail party. :) Anybody have any recommendations on gearing calculators? |

+1 on the MegaSquirt Megamanual.
For the advanced layman: "How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems" by Jeff Hartman "Sport Bike Performance Handbook" by Kevin Cameron (good info on induction design) anything by David Vizard... For the Engineers: "Scientific Design of Exhaust & Intake Systems" by Philip H. Smith "The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice Volumes 1&2" by Charles F. Taylor (referred to as "the bible" by powertrain engineers) "Internal Combustion Engine Handbook" by Richard V. Basshuysen and Fred Schafer (My personal favorite, it is very up-to-date on current technology. We use this in our "advanced engine technology" course at CSU Fresno) |
Sorry for slacking guys. I'll get this updated tonight.
